Is It Easy To Discern When The Food Passes Through Your Pouch ??

Recommended Posts

I'm curious of this question because....I'm still on the liquid phase and had one slime episode when I cheated a little bit when I had a little piece of pumpkin Pie. I had no idea the cake didn't pass through as I couldn't tell either way. It felt fine. The worse thing I would want is to not be able to discern when the pouch is full and to innocently keep put food in my mouth.

P.S. I know the wisdom of just having a cup of food (or meals the size of your fist to help prevent eating more food) but I'm still curious as if it is easy to discern when food passes through the pouch.

Thoughts/Opinions?

I'm still struggling with this, for what it's worth, and I'm 6 months in.

Good luck to you!!

If you're taking small enough bites and chewing your food thoroughly enough, you won't and shouldn't feel it.

Wow...that is really interesting actually. I always assumed you would know when your food passes through your pouch. This makes eating a fix portion (e.g. a cup or a full fist of food) all the more important it seems.

Any other thoughts/clarification?

I have felt food go through my band BUT only because it was too big a bite and not chewed properly ( early days of being banded).

Now we do have a little pouch above the band but that will only safely hold a maximum of about a tablespoon of food from memory. As missy said its important to take small bites, chew properly then swallow then wait a minute before doing it all again. This ensures the food has been squeezed through the band. If you do this you will eat pain free with the band and avoid pbing, sliming etc.

Now I know there are a few videos on you tube but I'm going to ask you to search for professor Paul O'Brien in YouTube. He has a video demonstrating what happens when you swallow your food as it goes through the whole process.

Also as you start to get fills and get more restriction you'll find your size of food needs to be smaller and smaller, gone are the days if taking a normal bite, chew a few times then swallowing.

Check out the videos they are very educational.

No, I don't feel it go through my band unless I have taken to big of a bite and it sits there trying to decide it it should go through or not. Then I can feel the release of the pressure, but generally, no I can not feel the food pass thru the band.

As the others have said if you are taking small enough bites and chewing properly then you cannot feel the food pass through the band. But if you take too big a bite and it gets stuck you can generally feel when that goes through.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
