Mayra130 2 Posted October 24, 2012 So I know we have to lose weight before the surgery but if you don't can the doctor say he/she can't do the surgery.
wildrose1966 396 Posted October 24, 2012 My dr never told me to lose weight, he did put me on a 2 week liquid diet to shrink my liver, but never said a thing about losing weight. Everyone gets different instructions.
DELETE THIS ACCOUNT! 12,703 Posted October 24, 2012 Yes, they can cancel the surgery. The purpose isn't as much to lose weight as it is to shrink the liver so it's safe to go forward with the surgery. Obese people have very fatty livers but it's also one of the first places we lose weight, hence the pre op diet to shrink it. If the doctor doesn't feel the liver has been shrank enough, they can and will cancel the surgery.
SueBee01 630 Posted October 25, 2012 Same with wild rose. No requirement to lose weight, just to follow the instructions.

SageTracey 608 Posted October 25, 2012 My surgeon described handling the liver during lap band surgery as like trying to manage a bowl of jelly (jello) with a pair of chopsticks. Following the pre-op diet to shrink your liver makes it easier for the surgeon to handle. My surgeon has stopped surgery and not put in lap bands for patients when he has found that the liver has not shrunk sufficiently for him to work with safely. MiniMi 1,468 Posted October 25, 2012 My doc tod me that he'd just cut me open to do it if it was too difficult. How's that for a motivator!
FallonB 102 Posted October 25, 2012 Mine said he's never canceled a surgery or stopped mid surgery. True Results did tell me that he would if I didn't lose the weight though. Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using LapBandTalk
