I was a little worried about the holidays and being on my pre-op diet. In my husbands family we have a ton of Christmas gatherings. I solved this by telling everyone about my pending surgery. Everyone is trying to accommodate me and help me not to cheat. Granted they aren't the greatest of cooks so the food isn't a real temptation...Christmas day I start Clear Liquids only...that will be a killer...cooking dinner for my family and not being about to eat it! I am determined to make this change...Good luck to all my fellow December bandsters!

I am just putting this out there to see how those who observe feel about getting banded during the holiday season. I have had a lot of people say to me "What a horrible time of year to have the surgery." I purposely did the surgery before the first of the year for the simple reason that I need to make a lifestyle change, and that includes holidays. I am actually pretty excited that I will not spend one more holiday season stuffed like a turkey for two months straight. Any thoughts?

I enjoyed my Thanksgiving and started my pre-op a few days later. Whenever I think of all the things (foods) I will miss this Christmas, I think about the cute little red dress I am going to wear NEXT year for Christmas! :D Also, if I cannot handle myself w/ the holidays and make better choices w/ food, no matter what the time of year it is, then the band won't work ... so the choice to be banded is the choice to make those changes. The whole 'getting through the holidays' bit is about perspective and I say THREE CHEERS for us doing this now ... Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and no doubt a very Happy New Year to all of us! Just imagine what 2013 will bring for us .... ! :D

Hey everyone! I had some catching up to do! Wow! Everyone is doing so good ...that is awesome! Surgery is Tuesday and the oddest thing happens now when I think about it ... my eyes get all teary and I get a bit weepy. Ummm ... why? LOL! I guess the reality is setting in and I am excited ... not so much nervous ... especially after I read how all the other post-op-peeps are doing.

Glad to hear everyone doing well! You all make is sound easy and I pray it's that way on Tuesday. Go in ... sleep ... wake up banded! I'm on day 20 of pre-op ... yes, you read that right ... I've been doing the liquid thing (with only 3 'real' meals in total during this time) and I am down 19 pounds as of today. My goal was 20 pounds and I have feeling I just may get there by Tuesday morning! Yeah!

Am I the only one who did not have to be on a pre-op diet? My surgery is scheduled for 12/13, which is Thursday, and all I have to do tomorrow, is have a good Breakfast, good lunch, then on liquids after that. After midnight, nothing at all.

I see most of you have been on a liquid diet beforehand...I wonder why my protocol is different? Anyone else not on a pre-op diet?

I didn't have to do a pre-op diet either, my doctor never mentioned it at all, my surgery is the 17th and I decided myself to do an all liquid diet a week out..Best wishes for today!!

I'm only on a liquid diet for the day before surgery, though I am supposed to eat healthy before that (with the warning that my surgeon can see what I've been eating for the past several weeks...which I don't want to think about too much).

As for Vitamins, I was told chewables are good, and that Flintstones in particular are good as long as they have enough Iron. I was cautioned about gummies because they may not absorb as well.

Thank you for your responses and support.

I think having surgery this time of year is absolutely hard, but I am glad that I did have it done on Dec 4. I would have gained 15 pounds over the holiday season, instead now I will lose 15 pounds over the holiday season.

Yesterday was so hard with my "head hunger" but I made it and had a wonderful night sleep and I have ready to face my next Christmas Parrty today in 45 minutes!! I did however cancel my weekend Christmas Party invitations, there will be heavy drinking and food. I don't want to be tempted by wine and get sick!

Again, thank you for all the support all of the LB members provide me and others. It definitely has made my pre-op and post -op bearable, knowing others are and have encountered what I am going through!!!

;)

I feel like the fact that we are doing this around the holidays (my surgery is Monday!) Makes this experience even more empowered and stronger. People don't understand whats it's like to be in our shoes, so maybe we can teach them the holidays are more than a day to stuff our face with the toxic food that got us here in the first place! You can do it!!!!!

I totally agree with you. I think we are facing our addiction at the most difficult time of the year and telling it to F O!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
