This Is So Hard, I Can't Eat..

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone,

I got my first fill in late September. That first fill didn't do anything for me. I ate regularly, finished my plate too.

Then I went back two weeks later and the doctor tighten the lapband for me..

Now I have trouble eating but am still hungry! I have my same appetite but can't eat the food comfortablely. I chew so much, then wait for it to go down.. food going down takes forever! Meanwhile my stomach is still growling.

It will take me over an hour to finish my plate of food. 20mins after my meal is just served, my food is cold.

I've vomitted twice!

I just wished my appetite can go away because I'm still hungry. I stop eating because its uncomfortable eating, not because I'm full.

Are you drinking enough Water and getting enough Protein? That helps me with the hunger. Another thought, maybe have a low calorie snack between meals to take the edge off. An hour to eat seems like a lot, maybe you need a little bit of your fill removed. If you're following all the rules, I'd talk to your nutritionist. Sorry this is happening to you. It sounds really frustrating.

First, are you sticking to a cup or less of food per meal?

Some things to realize, the first of which being a growling stomach isn't necessarily sign of hunger. Banded tummies are often very noisy so don't assume just because your is growling your hungry. That sounds simple enough, I know, but for a lot of us learning what physical hunger actually feels like takes time.

You also say you can "finish your plate". Please realize the band isn't supposed to stop you from eating. It's not it's job. It's your job to control your portions. The band is supposed to satiate your hunger so you can go longer periods of time on less food. Not stop you from eating.

If you are vomiting, I would strongly suggest talking to your surgeon. Vomiting can lead to slips so it's definitely not a risk worth taking. If you in fact physically hungry yet vomiting, I'd even go so far as to ask for him to do a check via barium swallow to make sure your band is in the right place. It's always better safe than sorry.

Best wishes to you.

You are not supposed to keep eating for an hour. Most nutritionists will tell you that after 20 min you should stop eating, if you keep eating then it means that you are having too much.

Vomited twice is probably because you are not yet used to how to eat with the band, it is a big learning curve.

Not feeling full is normal. In fact feeling full post band is a lot different to preband. You don't feel it in your stomach, you feel it in your chest. Quite often it is an unpleasant , uncomfortable feeling. You need to stop trying to get that full feeling that you had previously as that won't happen. You need to look out for more subtle signals that you have had enough - hiccups, runny nose, discomfort, sneezing etc

Thank you everyone so much for your comments. I gave it a few days and now I'm doing a lot better. Guess I just needed getting used to it. I don't throw up anymore & my eating habits are under control. I appreciate everyone's advice :-)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
