How Do I Get Enough Protein???

Recommended Posts

I had surgery 10/17. First mushy food was Refried Beans. I have been able to eat a few spoonfuls b4 I'm stuffed full. Mostly sticking to a liquid diet although doc approved mushies. My stomach is still very sensitive to everything. I'm finally starting to feel back to normal. Currently trying to deal with what my therapist calls my "food mourning". Right now feeling like I hate my band. I'm hungry, frustrated, tired, and I want a piece of pizza! This too shall pass...

I read on here people getting around 70g of Proteins day... Please let me know how. I go to my dr Thursday as I have not been since June 2011 (i know:( ) and haven't lost anything on about a year. I am addicted to sweets. And meats don't go down great and I actually sometimes hate eating!! What are some good Proteins I can try? I started proteins shakes for lunch..which is usually my first meal of the day as I don't like eating in the morning. Can it be I am not eating enough as to why I am not losing. Please help! Thank u all!!

I've definitely had the same issue!! 70g is sooo much esp w restricted diet!!

I've found these amazing Protein powders at GNC.. Make me feel so much more energized and full.

Their 100% whey Protein 130 calories. 24 g of protein! (Choc, Cookies & cream, and unflavored are my favs! U can even cook w the unflavored!! :) ) also I've found if u go into the GNC store n tell them u say buy one get one for 50% off they will give u that deal in the Store too.

Also I was told to get this chocolate gnc amplify XL- double chocolate. 3 scoops is 245 cal, 41g protein. But has sooo many Vitamins and flax seed etc..

The issue with broccoli is volume. Broccoli has a lot of Protein per 100 calories, but you'd have to eat almost 4 cups to equal 100 calories. 1 cup chopped broccoli is 29 calories and 2.5 grams Protein. 2 oz sirloin steak has 14 grams protein and is 110 calories and is within our volume limits 1/2 to 1 cup food per meal.

There are other sources of dense protein if you have trouble with meat. String cheese, eggs, tuna salad, cottage cheese, Greek yogurt are some options. I mix 1/4 kashi go lean crunch with 6 oz Dannon light and fit vanilla NF Greek yogurt....15 gr protein, which is my meal goal.

I also find that if I'm making meat loaf, I add a bit of olive oil, ff Greek yogurt (plain), eggs to my 93% lean beef, + a bit of old fashioned oats and ground veggies. It's delish, you can make meatballs out of the same recipe. The meat is more moist, softer, but is still dense protein.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
