? About Taking Advil

Recommended Posts

Hey everyone. I'm now 3 weeks post surgery, and I know they told me prior to surgery to not use NSAIDS (ie Advil, Naproxen, aspirin, etc.). Do you think it's ok if I take some now?? I had my monthly friend come today and my arthritis has been acting up. Advil/Ibuprofen works so much better for this kind of pain then Tylenol. ???‰

My surgeon will still not allow me to take them. The are more irritating to the stomach and the band. They suggest Tylenol but for me that doesn't work well so if you need to take I would suggest you use sparingly, they do make liquid motrin in child dosage and it goes through quicker but you have to take more. In the beginning I used a lot of liquid meds so not to irritate my band. I also got in trouble with my surgeon because of my pulmonary doc putting me on prednisone for acute bronchitis during that first year. Another med very irritating to the band.

Thanks Diane and Missy. I know they said it irritates the band and I already have stomach issues related to using Advil excessively for years. I'll make sure I only use it when I'm really hurting. ;)

My doctor said NO. Yes they can damage your stomach lining. Also prolonged use of NSAIDS has been linked to strokes. I had a stroke at 39!!! After using a Perscription strength NSAID for a year. I still think it was a major cause of my stroke.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
