4 Days Post Op Why No Dairy?

Recommended Posts

Ok so I'm 4 days post-op (banded 10/17), and following everything religiously. The one thing that is bugging me is that I am not allowed milk of any kind according to my Dr.'s post-op instructions. Any idea the reasoning behind this? I get the whole sugar free thing, but not this... Thanks!

Kat

Gas?? Not sure, but when i started working out with a trainer he took my dairy away also. There is a lot of calories and there is fat in dairy. Anyone else have an idea why?

Because if your on Clear Liquids its not a clear liquid. I would assume at four days post op you are still on clear liquids correct?

Yes, still on clears. But my surgeon took away dairy until week 4 postop. I'm guessing its because of fat and calories, I just wanted other opinions as to why.

Well it is full of fat and a lot of sugar. I had no dairy until 4 weeks post op. I think its pretty standard. But even now I am careful with dairy because of the sugar content in them.

Even skim milk?

Fat free milk does'nt have any fat and is pretty low in calories. My doctor did not take away dairy even during clears. I was allowed Protein Shakes and they weren't clear either. I was also allowed low fat cottage and ricotta cheeses during mushies and low fat greek yogurt. I would call the doctors office and ask if you can have fat free milk if you are making Protein shakes. I would agree full fat milk has a lot of calories. I also have read multiple places of people having weight loss surgery eating ice cream since it is after all a liquid!

I would ask your doctor. Every doctor is different and has their own ideas what works.

My personal opinion? His logic makes zero sense. Skim milk is fat free but still has Protein and Calcium. I was told to drink it in from the day after surgery because it's good for you. But again, that was my surgeon, so you'll want to ask yours.

I'm on full liquids for two weeks then move on to mushy phase for a week or two! I was allowed milk on pre op diet as well as now. Only time I wasn't was Clear Liquids the 24 hour period after surgery.

@kato--I was banded on the 17th also and have the same restrictions as you except my dr. Said I could have skim milk after day 5. I'm looking forward to having sf pudding and adding skim milk to my Protein shake! Today is the first day that I'm actually hungry but I think I'm going to be too scared to eat "real food" whenever the time comes.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
