Recommended Posts

I had lapband with plication in May 2012. I am having STRONG cravings esp certain times of the month for sweets. How does the sugar alcohol affect the carb count???

Thanks Missy for responding. I am on a 29 carbs count for the day and I was taught to read the nutritional labels from my dietitian. I found some sugar free candy that I would LOVE to have and it say is has 15 carbs but 15 of them are sugar alcohol. I have tried the Atkins Diet before and you didnt count those as actual carbs so I didnt know if anyone else had the same issues and had discussed it with their dietician. I left a message for mine on Thurs but she was out of town and will return next week.

My nutritionist says you can deduct the Fiber and sugar alcohols to come up with the carbs. But be forewarned that too many pieces of sugar free candy (sometimes even just 2 or 3) can make you sick as a dog. I learned the hard way :)

Yes it would count towards your actual carb count then. Most things that say "sugar free", like candies and Cookies, are pretty high in carbs because they still have to get that sweet flavor from somewhere.

I'm not on a restricted carb diet, however I do think a smart phone app like Lose It may help you. It's pretty awesome because the database is filled with nutritional information, including carbs and Protein, of tons of foods. Even restaurant food. If something isn't in the database, you can bar code scan it in.

Best wishes to you!

Thanks 2012 - I know what happens when you eat too much of them LOL sometimes better than a laxative

Complete with horrific stomach cramps. I learnt that years ago when I ate a cup of them at the cinema in the days before they had to print a warning on them.

They're forbidden on my lw fodmap diet as major gut irritants - anything ending in "ol" - xylitol, mannitol, sorbitol, etc.

And be careful because stevia isn't just stevia - it's mixed with xylitol to make it edible. If you've ever had pure stevia it's horrid.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
