3 Days Post Surgery And Here Are My Thoughts

Recommended Posts

  1. Very surprised that I didn't feel that gas pain or shoulder pain at all. Perhaps a technique or system that Dr. Kuri and his staff uses - Not sure

  2. Was very surprised I had a catheter in me. When the nurse took it out, I yelped liked a dog. My dad and wife had a nice little laugh

  3. The 2mg of antivan (aka Lorazapam) the night before (and night after surgery) was nice as I got some great sleep

  4. Dr. Kuri's Staff was a class act. Marble pristine floors in the hospital as well as a security guard in my hall....made my trip to Tijuana a very pleasant surprise. Oh...forgot the follow-up phone call to my hotel room by Dr. Kuri the night before we left. He even greeted us at the van just before we went back to San Diego...just to say bye (again....classy move)

  5. My wife got to be in the surgery room to watch me have surgery. She is a nurse but I was quite surprised they let her in the operating room.

  6. First day after surgery was probably the worse. Specifically, the nausea from the anesthesia.

  7. Walked quite a bit the day after surgery which I was surprised at

  8. Can keep liquids down and have noticed a BIG difference in the amount of liquids I can hold down from day #2 to Day #3.

  9. Anybody scared about going to Tijuana, Mexico for surgery shouldn't blink twice. The level of care, professionalism and the attitude of the staff was way above expected.

  10. I'm down 6lbs so far :)

I'm so happy it went so well minus the catheter ;) I'm a nurse as well and my experience here in the states was horrible. It strictly had to do with the hospital alone. My Dr and his staff are phenomenal!!! I'm just very disappointed in the my hospital experience. So happy to hear that your experience was above and beyond!! :))

He and his entire staff is great. The care is amazing actually but I'm sure its like that with most Mexican doctors. The culture is different and plus they know they battle a lot of fears of going to Mexico to do surgery. They are a class act from top to bottom. You will see for yourself soon.

P.S. They is a great Italian Restaurant (very upscale actually) off to the right of the TGA Friday's (e.g. Sareintos ...or something like that). I highly recommend that restaurant if you want to get a good meal the day before surgery. There is 4 people waiting at your table (not kidding). It's right across the street from Hospital Angeles. .

All the best,

MD

Thanks for your update. I'm scheduled in January with Dr. Ortiz, but I still like to hear about how the Tijuana experience goes. Where will you be getting your fills?

Can't say the personal experience with Dr. Ortiz.....only Dr. Kuri. However...I'm sure Ortiz is fine as I know he has a lot of experience also. Ortiz does a great job in marketing and is a little younger than Dr. Kuri. Kuri is 58-62 range and Ortiz is around 42-48 I believe.

Either way...you will be fine I'm sure....

Fyi. My gas and shoulder pain started until day 7 for some reason. It lasted 5 days on and off. Felt like stabs under my left arm in my ribs, in my neck and down my arm.

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
