1 week post op visit

Recommended Posts

well, i had my 1 week post op class and visit. everything went great. i cant say enough about the hospital, everyone was absolutely wonderful. my dh is there right now. he had his thyroid removed yesterday. they wont do his band until he had that taken care of. he had a large mass that was affecting his treachea. so he is doing much better today. should be coming home tomorrow. then he will have his band surgery may 16. i have my first fill appt scheduled for may 4. im just really wanting some mashed potatoes and some oatmeal right now. they really enforced sticking to the soft Proteins for the next month. so has anyone else eaten anything like potatoes or oatmeal in their first month and had any problems?

im 7 days banded and have been on full liquids...until yesterday. i made a very very soft scrambled egg. have to say i enjoyed it and felt guilty for 'eating' instead of slurping... though it was soft enough to almost slurp. sorta. what can i say, im an eggy kind of girl. i have heard it said that the texture even gets to some diehard egg fans later on in band life. i also tried some instant oatmeal. it was yucky for me. but i could have eaten it with no problem.

I have literally just got out of hospital. I'm supposed to on fluids for 2 weeks then 2 weeks of puree stuff. I'm also interested to hear what were your favourite meals during this period.

My first attempt at mashed potatoes was not good. Regular mashed potatoes with butter and milk are really kind of Gummy. I think maybe a little bit of baked potato with a small dab of margarine would have been better.

I haven't tried oatmeal yet.

Whatever you attempt chew chew chew chew and eat slow slow slow...put that fork down.

I was banded 03/14/06...and its a trial and error learning thing...just don't push it too fast. Good luck!!

ethansgrandma,

I was allowed oatmeal and mashed potatoes within my first month. I've been too scared to try the oatmeal, I just don't visualize it going down well, but mashed potatoes have been no problem. I've also been able to do hashbrowns w/o problems. Just remember small bites & chew... IMO it would be hard to get something stuck at this point following those rules.

There are only two things I can even feel when I eat - one is banana, and the other is applesauce. I can eat them, but I definitely feel them as they go through. I don't know why those two things in particular, but that's how it is. :)

Angelu, click on one of the tickers here in this thread, choose weight loss and follow the instructions. When you get to the end, copy all of the code in the first window and paste it to your signature here in LBT, then save the changes.

my doc...24-48 hours liquid diet

mushies for the next 4 weeks

solids as tolerated after 4 weeks...HOWEVER...

he released me to eat solids after two weeks. i was banded on march 13, and i do not think i had ANY swelling/restriction where the band was placed. I wasn't too hungry on day one or two, but by day three...i could have eaten a small cow. I would sneak myself(i do not know who i was trying to sneak by...?) a solid food about once a day, and make sure i chewed to a smurf-tacularly liquified consistency before i swallowed it. I finally broke down and asked the doc to move on to solids. they just reminded me to chew and pay attention to the feeling of fullness. I am staying very aware that i am still in the healing stage, and i am not eating 14 slices of pizza or nothing...although, with my minimal restriction, i BET i could eat that much! I am also mixing a single swallow of Water at the end of my meal, just to ensure i have sufficiently liquified whatever solid i have eaten. i haven't lost any significant weight, but I did not expect to until i get filled.

good luck to you, and remember, every doc has their own preferences and opinions, just wanted to share my experience...

On week 2 of post-op diet.

I have had the banana nut weight smart instant oatmeal the last 2 mornings. (i did however add a little fat-free half and half to it to make it a little runnier) It went down fine and was yummy!

banded 3/23, still 8lbs down (initially was 12lbs down, but gained that extra colon mass weight)

if i chew well, i can normally. and i have. but i know i must stop and go back to mushies. i had some fried rice/ bbq'd chx/ some spinach Pasta. cottage cheese/ bowl of Cereal. sheeesh. i did have a weird kind of hurt like under my left rib area. i was thinking, "this is healing time and im not following the rules". im back to full liquids today. one meal at a time. i keep on reading everyones post about how good they have been before thier fills... and am i the only one who has eaten real food? i dont think so. lol.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
