Plication ~ Yes Or No?

Recommended Posts

When the very first lap band surgeries were done this procedure was done with it. At that time it caused the stomach that was folded over to die because it had no blood flow to the tissue. I know they have improved the way they do it now but I myself would not have it done. Its enough to worry about the band its self but that is my opinion only.

In my support group there are more plications than anything. I have a band, and have no desire to have the plication. At least with the band, you can control some of its progress and if for any reason you need to have it removed, it can be done. Just another opionion.

I'm pretty sure that my doctor is now routinely doing the plication with the band. I was told it was probably going to become the new "standard" by my nurse practitioner at one of my appointments.

I am extremely happy with mine, zero complications, 14 months out. I think it's all down to personal preference and a good heart to heart between you and your surgeon!

What I would want to know is can it be undone. Yes your band can come out, but if you have a slip or erosion can theplication be undone too for complete recovery? If not, personal I would just go with a sleeve.

I know little about plication so I may be off the mark but I kind of don't see the band wiith plication choice as much different to a sleeve other than they're not actually removing part of the stomach?

I had the band with plication done in August. I have had no problems. My doctor lets you make the choice. I was told that even if you have the band removed, the plication would still help with your weight loss. My doc doesn't see why one wouldn't want to do it. It was a great decision for me.

This is interesting to me because I have plication but didn't know it. I am self pay so I didn't think it was included. It was more than two months later when they were talking about it at support group that I found out he does it to all.. I said they were wrong and the nurse showed me my chart and sure enough, I had it. Now that it's all done I am glad he did - I've had no problems, I feel really great and I think it will help. It sort of freaked me out though and I probably wouldn't have chosen it but I'm glad now that I have it. Does any of that make sense? Dr. didn't sneak it in, I just didn't realize.

And sommers, plication is where the fold a bit of the stomach up and sew some of it so your stomach is smaller in the portion it still holds. My understanding is that it IS reversible but haven't thought about it that much... google it maybe? Interesting pictures out there about it. I think it's becoming more common.

Not that you want to reverse weight loss surgery, more a what if you had to do so.

It wouldn't worry me that much, half my colon is gone and I have adjusted.

Wow i didnt even know they did plication with lap band. I only have the band and then they sewed a piece of skin over the band to help keep it from slipping

I have the band with plication. I was told they were both reversible. The band always was and with the plication still being tested that is was reversible up to 5-7 years. It was also explained to me that the plication would make slippage of the band nearly impossible. I had the band in once before and had to have it removed because of slippage due to food poisoning and a virus which caused extreme vomiting. I waited too long to go to the dr to address it and when I did go it was too late to do anything but take it out. I am excited about my journey and can't wait to see the results!

P.S. pay no attention to my ticker...I am having trouble changing my weight. Btw, it was 262 last tuesday and I go to the dr thursday again...can't "weight" to see the new loss!

I'm pretty sure plication can be reversed. None of the stomach is removed.

Based on my experience with the band and the sleeve, the function of the band w/ plication is not equivalent to the function of the sleeve. Off the top of my head, some differences are:

SLEEVE:

1) has a hormonal feature: removal of about 75% of the stomach supposedly (not for me, yet) drastically reduces production of the hunger hormone, grehlin, so the patient is rarely hungry

2) it's permanent

3) it's not adjustable

3) rapid gastric emptying can cause dumping syndrome

4) has a little-discussed malabsorption effect: removal of about 75% of the stomach reduces the production of hydrochloric acid (needed for absorption of micronutrients) and may cause Iron and other deficiences/excesses with various medical problems (such as anemia) as the result

5) may have neuronal effects (I can't find the source for that data at the moment, but I didn't make it up)

BAND W/ PLICATION

1. has no known direct effect on grehlin production

2. Is reversible

3. it's adjustable (band fills/unfills)

4. no dumping

5. no malabsorption

6. presence of the band against the stomach has a neuronal effect (activates the vagus nerve) that results in hunger and appetite suppression

7. reduced size of the stomach below the band decreases the patient's food capacity

8. the plication can delay the need for band fills

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
