livelife4me 1 Posted October 19, 2012 My doctor's literature States no coffee for six months after surgery. Granted I'm not one of those ppl who'll tear someone's head of if I don't get a cup but makes me warm & toasty while working nites. Than same booklet turns around and says tea is exceptable huh.. must not be the caffeine t cause tea does contain more. Than no chewing gum when asked why nurse practitioner said because u might swallow it and immediate blockage would form causing emergency surgery. Mommy maybe life exists without gum but coffee with delicious sugarfree Creamer . Sigh okay at least it only half a year I better stop now though!
farmgirl04 231 Posted October 19, 2012 Not sure what to say. If I was told no gum I blocked it out of my mind- I have gum in my mouth for hours each day. I was a gum swallower before, now I am so terrified about what could happen that I have had no issues remembering to throw it out. I buy my gum at costco, for goodness sake! It is one on my 'pleasures', that and Gummy vits!
elcee 3,341 Posted October 19, 2012 Tea does contain caffeine but not as much as coffee. I don't know why some Drs don't allow it, maybe it is because these days no-one drinks "normal standard coffee" instead they all seem to drink really fancy, calorie filled concoctions. I don't see what could be wrong with 1 - 2 cups of coffee a day, either black or with a splash of milk and no sugar. 1 ☠carolinagirl☠ reacted to this

(all dr's are different). on my pre op i was able to have coffee and on my post op (after a week of clears though) and i drink it now. like elcee, i dont see what the big deal is but this is your dr and its best to go by what they recommend for you. cheryl2586 3,053 Posted October 19, 2012 I think the gum thing is about swallowing air which can cause stomach pain. I drink coffee (regular) sometimes and gum is a daily thing. I dont remember how many months post op I was but I didnt drink coffee for a year.
Rojasanoll 920 Posted October 19, 2012 I was given mixed signals prior to lapband surgery. My dietitian said NO coffee, so I didn't drink coffee up to surgery. On my first post op visite with my surgeon, he said I could drink coffee. So, I'm back on 1 cup of regular coffee. I guess some believe the coffee ingridients might stimulate people into eating more. As for gum, I never was a gum chewer. Best wishes
MiniMi 1,468 Posted October 19, 2012 My nutritionist told me no coffee because it stimulates hunger. I didn't want to risk being even more hungry than I am now ( banded 10/5 I'm in mushy stage). Gum is like the straw, you swallow more air, according to my nutritionist. My doctor confirmed this. Reading here about the possibility of swallowing it just gave me added reason to never chew gum ( don't like to anyway) Of course it really is " to each his own" but I got where I am today by breaking rules, stretching boundaries, being a know it all. For me, my post op life will be completely different than my preop because I'm different and determined....to follow the rules at least that my team has for me. Gum and coffee are little things to give up for feeling great again about me!
honk 780 Posted October 19, 2012 After reading on here that coffee was a non-no I commented to my doctor that I was going to miss it. His reply "Why can't you have coffee?" I talked to the Nutritionist and she said the issue is caffienated coffee might stimulate your hunger and it is a dieretic (makes you dehydrated). Soooo I have one cup of regular coffee and then move to Decaf. New England in the winter is a #%#%$^ without hot coffee. I also take my coffee black with Splendra so it's about 5 calories. As mentioned above it is reallllyyyy easy to drink A LOT of calories in a coffee drink.

livelife4me 1 Posted October 19, 2012 Spot on post! Thanks. Kay, of coarse I'll follow what's suggested I'm just. Not a tea drinker and theirs ways around adding screamer & sugar. Add portien powder saves calories Cappuccino, mocha etc. I've tried infusion bariatric version. Put I'll continue this after my six months. And too many calories in sugar free mints these things add up!! I wonder if listerine melt aways or breath sprays happen to be low? Does anybody know
kayla_xo 1 Posted October 23, 2012 My doctor told me one cup of coffee in the morning wouldn't be an issue just to not add a whole bunch of sugar and cream which isn't really an issue cause I use Splenda then he just suggested not drinking a whole lot of tea and beverages with caffeine
thinkt2013 74 Posted October 23, 2012 coffee oddly enough supresses my appetite and calms my stomach and i only drink plain black coffee. My nutritionist said if that is the case, then it is fine. 1 knewland reacted to this
♕ajtexas♕ 3,771 Posted October 23, 2012 Wow, 9 months banded, drink coffee every morning, chew gum everyday. Doc never said I couldn't. Amazing how different doctors orders are.
Lana08 37 Posted October 23, 2012 Most teas actually contain MORE caffeine then coffee, so that is odd. I'm allowed coffee but they recommend only one cup a day due to the fact that's its a dierctic meaning it depletes ur Water consumption so u need to get more water to make up for it. I have one cup every morning and enjoy it!!! It's worth an extra cup or two of water in my mind! I'm willing to give up a lot but 1 cup a day helps start my day off right.... honk 780 Posted October 23, 2012 I chew gum during my daily walks, 5-7 miles. Since I don't carry Water with me it helps keep my mouth moist.
