Do I Need A Fill?...haven't Had One...

Recommended Posts

I was banded exactly one week ago today. I have been eating well...with good portion control--1/4 to 1/2 cup per meal. I am very satisfied feeling; yet I do not feel like food is coming up in my throat or anything...just that I need to burp. When I get that feeling, I stop eating....and do not feel I need or want to eat more.

So, my question is that since I am doing well on my portions and my protein/vitamin intake, do ya'll think I need a fill at my first post-op appointment. My doctor said that during that appointment we would decide if I would get a fill or not that day.

I do not feel a GREAT big restriction per say...but I do feel satisfied and not hungry at all...for at least three hours or more. And I am doing well with my weight loss...very steady--a one to two pounds about every two days....I have lost six pounds since my surgery--I am one week out from surgery.

Thank you all for your help! I love my Bandy Family!!!!!

Most surgeons don't do a first a fill for 4-6 weeks after surgery. A big part of that is to give your stomach time to heal and for the swelling to go down.

Being as you're only a week post op, you likely still have considerable swelling and definitely some healing to do. Right now is too soon to tell if you need a fill or not. Over the next couple weeks as you heal, you may find your hunger returning full force. Or, you may be one of the lucky ones who even after healed you still don't need a fill yet. Only time will tell.

Give yourself time to heal then worry about fills. Best wishes to you :)

Hi Dana, All Doctors are different but I would be very surprised if you got a fill just one week out. My first post op appointment a week after surgery was so the Surgeon could see how I was feeling and how I was healing up. They looked at my incisions and to make sure there is no infection.

I agree with Missy above that this is a time for healing. Chances are whatever restriction you are feeling at this time is probably due to swelling. What Missy described about feeling restriction at first and then short two weeks later hunger returned full force is exactly what happened to me.

Are you eating solid food already?

IMO, it's too soon for a fill. You're doing fine and while your stomach is healing from the sutures and your band is settling in against your stomach, you do not need more irritation from a fill.

THank you all! :-) I am on solid foods...and things are going down just fine. Still, I take care in chewing and my portion size. You all are so awesome!

Ok here's my take on do you or do you not need more fill.As long as you're able to keep a bigger part of your meal down and also lose weight gradually.I wouldn't think you would need a fill.Again some of this is trial and error. If you can get to a point where the weight just peels off.with little to no effort on your part.Plus get your nourishment a.Then you're where you need to be.Most of the time.In the beginning of having a band. You may want to schedule appoints every 3 to 4 weeks. At least for the first year. You have to get to a point.Where you really don't think of your band as much and you're losing weight.Like its a normal part of your daily life.Plus your thoughts about food are only when you really need to feed your body

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
