Crushing Pills...

Recommended Posts

I've been wondering how long post-op you need to crush your pills (I take Metformin for diabetes). When is it safe to take whole pills?

I started taking full pills the day after surgery and haven't had any issues :)

I had all of my medications that were available in alternative forms (liquid or soluble tablet) changed prior to my surgery...the few that had no alternatives had to be crushed for 2 weeks post op.

Variables to consider are the size of the pill, and your surgeon's instructions. Even after 2 entire weeks had passed since my surgery, the first thing I got "stuck" on was one of my pills just after receiving the go ahead to resume swallowing them. Not very pleasant...and I've made certain not to let that happen again...

I have just been cutting my pills in 1/2 or 3 pieces depending on the size of the pill :)

On the subject of crushing pills, just be sure to never break or crush a time released pill. One that gives you an intitial dose and then another dose hours later- such as a 12 hour sudefed. You will get both doses at once.

My dr said I had to crush for five weeks. Some of my meds taste horrible so I cut them in half or fourths My time released I cut and take half now and the rest later in the day. Last week I got one of the little red Sudefeds stuck!!! Had to drink lots of Water to dissolve it. Now I even cut those.

Two months out from hiatal hernia repair.  Surgeon said to expect a lot more flatulence...something about the 'air' no longer being able to 'burp' out so comes out the other end.  That is my experience but have no understanding of why that swallowed air cannot be 'burped'. ???

As I understand it since your stomach is smaller and not completely resting against your diaphragm anymore you no longer have the ability to "push" burps out as well. Plus, since its smaller and we don't digest slower the trapped air moves a lot quicker out of the stomach so its no longer available to burp out. Hence the other option for removal.

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!
