Is Your Diabetes Better Or Gone After Lbs

Recommended Posts

Am seriously considering LBS, more to control my diabetes and the consequences I suffer than for losing weight (although I do have bmi of 34). No matter how I starve myself and stay away from carbs , my Blood Glucose is almost always above 200. It goes esp. high in the early a.m .

Please tell me if your diabetes was helped from LBS surgery and where I might find reliable stats on what LBS does for diabetes? Thx, genny

I am still in the fight against diabetes. However my doctors tell me that I am not the usual diabetic patient. Each patient is different, so talk with the surgeon and endocrinologist. they should be able to point you in the right direction.

when i went for WLS(lapband) I was Morbidly obessee and i had PCOS(like diabetis but not insulin dependant). I was told by my R.endocrinologist that for some reason the WLS surgery of banding really helps the girls with the PCOS.

I've lost seventy four pounds (around 1/2 of my excess weight) and my PCOS seems to be improving . But I still need the metformin to help keep my suggars in check.

talk with your doctors about how WLS will effect and hopefuly change your diabetis fo the better ven with a lower bmi they might aprove you but that depends on the insurance company i think.

Genny,

I am a type II diabetic with a significant family history for this.

Prior to lap band, I was on 1000 mg of metformin twice a day, and on 6u of humolog insulin in the am, 6u of humolog insulin with meals, and 60 u of lantus in the evening. I had a problem with high am sugars as well.

Once I began the liquid pre-op diet, I monitored my sugars closely. I stopped taking my insulin and meds because my sugars were normal! I couldn't believe it. I worried they might creep up again when I started eating solids, but that has not happened.

My A1C was 7.7 in June. I had lap band surgery on Sept. 6th. My A1C was drawn again this past Wednesday (October 10th) and it was down to 6.2. My doctor said it will continue to decrease because that A1C wasn't even based on a full 12 weeks of this new lifestyle, but rather almost 8 weeks of it.

I am ecstatic. I don't know what I would have done if not for lap band. My cholesterol also went from 201 in June to 185 as of October 10th. I could never have come off of all of these diabetic meds if not for this surgery, and certainly, this committed lifestyle is improving other aspects of my health like my cholesterol, for example. I have lost 25 pounds since starting the pre-op liquid diet almost eight weeks ago.

I feel great. I hope this helps! Best of luck on your journey!

I was type 2 diabetic and had PCOS before surgery. I had surgery 09/2010 and 11/2010 my meds were cut in half by my dr. And by 12/2010 I was completely off meds. My sugar has been normal since then.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
