Liquid Phase - Can't Get Protein - Suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I was banded 10/11/12. I'm doing good with fluids (46 oz today), but the Protein Shakes now make me nauseated. In fact, the thought of the shakes makes me nauseated. What will I do for Protein until I move to mushies? I've ordered some Protein from unjury, but it won't be here for a few days....

I'd love to get some suggestions...

Thanks!

Now I am just the opposite of line dancer, I can not stand the pre mixed I like the powdered kind. If the flavor is the issue or the milk base you could go to a Vitamen Store or GNC and purchase something called Isopure. This comes in a bottle, it is 40gms of Protein and it sorta tastes like koolaid, there is still some after taste but it is tolerable. I like the grape and pineapple. The nutrition info is 140 calories, no carbs and 40 gms of protein There are a dozen or so flavors. As I stated I have come to like the powdered protein, it has taken me two years. I used to order from a web site called Bariatriceating.com. They make the best unflavored Protein Powder I have used, it does not change texture of food and I used to add it to my yogurt, Soups, latte's and mashed potatos. Hope some of this helps. It is hard in the beginning but it does get better.

Try the Atkins chocolate shakes, they have a little less protien than others but they are alot more tolerable and not a huge investment. It's super important that you get some protien in right now or your going to feel like crap! I don't know of any other significant source of protien in liquid form other than shakes, isopure(gag), and Unjury. I guess if you simply cannot do a shake at all sip broth it has a little protien.

I'm guessing that it is the sweet that you are sick of? I recently went through this as I was placed on liquid diet for 6 weeks. I've heard of Proteins in form of Soup (maybe the unjury brand ??) Anyhow, out of desperation this is what I did (do) just to break away from all the sweetness in the Protein Drinks. I do very much like whole pinto Beans, so, I take 3/4 cup of pinto Beans along with it's juice and blend it (puree) it with a tad of beef broth with a few slices of jalapenos. Probably not the highest in Protein, but, what a break from the sweet stuff. You probably don't want to do this often, but, a break sure does help.

I am editing this because I just realized that you are newly banded. If you choose to try this I would get the OK from your doctor. jake

Just been waiting until time for my consult with my bariatric surgeon. It's scheduled for Jan 9th. Turns out I won't actually be seeing him. Apparently it'll be with his P.A.             Not sure what to expect. I thought this is where the surgeon would discuss the best surgery option for me. For years I had my heart set on the sleeve, but I've read so many people have issues with reflux - even if they've never had it before - that they've had to be revised to the bypass. I already deal with GERD & take 40 mg of Omeprazole daily, so I started studying about bypass and honestly, it seems like it might be the better choice for me. How can we discuss surgery options if the surgeon is not there?
What happened at your first consult? Trying to get an idea of what to expect, or maybe I should say, what NOT to expect.

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
