Do Your Stomach Nerve Endings Help Curb Your Hunger???

Recommended Posts

In researching this surgery quite some time, no one has clearly been able to tell me that the nerve endings (in the top part of the stomach where the band is placed) helps you feel satisfied or have that full feeling. It would make sense that they did because when you eat normally (and your stomach is full) the food is near the top part of your stomach which says ...stop eating because your full.

With the band....it seems when the food sits in the pouch area...it would be near the nerve endings which causes you to feel satiated. I mean SOMETHING has to cause you to feel satiated and my theory is the nerve endings (in the top part of the stomach area) is what actually makes you have the feeling of satiated or a full feeling.

Thoughts/Opinions?

Nerve "stretch receptors" in the wall of the stomach are one part of a complex series of events that signal your brain you have eaten enough and need to stop eating, and help signal satiety. There are also hormone signals involved in the process.

I'm not certain that these are only located at the top of the stomach. Feeling "full" post band is a totally different signal for me than it was pre band.

How are they different...please explain as I'm sure many of us can benefit from your knowledge.

As you know I'm not banded until Monday, but my Dr explained it like this.

He said," it's not going to be like a Thanksgiving fullness, you feel in your stomach, but more a tightness in the lower part of your chest".

I really had to think about this...it's become difficult for me to remember how it felt to be full prior to having my band...For me it was almost a feeling of being "bloated" with a very slight pressure in my abdomen. I do recall that there were subtle signals to warn me not to over eat, however it was easy to miss those signals if you were focused on finishing everything on your plate. If I heeded those signals, I did not feel over full, just satiated and no longer hungry.

With the band, I would say it is more of a feeling of tightness in the area of my band...and you are not supposed to eat to that level of fullness. That's why it is imperative to measure your portions; you don't risk stretching your pouch, and you stop eating when the feeling of hunger is gone.

That's also the reason that we are supposed to have Protein first; Protein is essential for proper nutrition, carbs much less...and there are many times I don't finish my veggies.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
