Not The Easy Way Out

Recommended Posts

I have a friend that has lost about the same amout as me, but she did it with Weight Watchers. She tells everybody she lost it the hard way-no surgery. I just want to scream! The band has been a great tool for me but I have exercised and have given up foods and drinks that I love to loose this weight. I work at it just like she does. I just took a different route. Just had to vent! Thanks.

It's a huge misconception, based on ignorance, that WLS is the easy way out. Those of us who've had WLS know it's definitely not an easy way out. If it were an easy way out, there wouldn't be so many people on these forums saying "I'm not losing weight" or worse "help I gained".

The band is a great tool but it's just that- a tool. Changing our eating habits to healthy ones for a lifetime, restricting our portion sizes, and exercising is all our work to do.

It's definitely not easy...though it is worth it :)

what works for her may not work for you or me or whomever

you did what worked for you

that doesnt mean she's better or we are (taking the ez way)

we did what we had to do to make ourselves well

end of story. now keep on keeping on

Well just wait an see who keeps it off!! I speak from my personal experience I tried many ways of weight loss and a lot of them worked but in the end the weight came back plus more! So far with the band what I have lost is still lost and I'm hoping its forever!! :)

As I have said before, sometimes I think telling people about the band is a disservice to all of us. We work dang hard, and don't you ever forget. As an aside many years ago I lost 25 pounds on weight watchers, then gained back 50! My WW leader had lost 100 lbs. I saw her the other day, 10 years out ans she weighs 300+!! It's long term that matters!

It's a tool to lose but a life saver to maintain. I have lost hundreds of pounds over the years and gained it all back plus plus plus.

This time is different. I am not physically able to eat like I used to so if I woke up tomorrow having forgotten everything I have made myself do in the past 23 months the band will quickly remind me!!

Ignorant people like your friend really annoy me. We can all loose weight with weightwatchers, healthy choices blah blah blah blah. You have worked just as hard as her and she should be proud of your loss as she is if her own loss. Like we all know we can loose the weight, every single diet out there works if you stick to it BUT once you come off of it, well we all know what happens.

Did you point out to her that once she gets comfortable that it may all creep back on but your tool, if you continue using it as the tool your weight won't creep back on?

Today is a perfect example for me, my daughter is in hospital, she had to have an operation to screw her big toe back together as she had an accident at gymnastics a few nights back and had a nasty break. I've been at the hospital most of last night and all day today. Hadn't eaten anything since the previous night as I wasn't hungry and have been silently stressed out. Tonight by five pm I was so hungry all I could think of was stuffing my face with junk food, I even went through all the junk drive ins in my head to see what I would get on the way home ( I'm obviously still wanting to turn to food as a comfort). The comfort urges were there but I drove past every single one of them, came home and made myself a healthy tuna salad and only ate half. The band kicked in for me when I needed it most.

So let people spew out the words you all took the easy way out. Let us think, stuff you, you have no idea what you're talking about and give them a big I'm banded and proud smile!!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
