How To Measure Food?

Recommended Posts

Hey,

I am fresh off my first fill after an unfill 4-5 years ago, doing soft foods now. I have some questions that I meant to ask my nutritionist but kept forgetting.

When I am done "recovering" from my fill, I would like to start measuring my food (I eyed it before) and don't understand how to do it the band way.

If I am to eat a cup of food per meal, do I pre-cut the food and then fill the cup?

I am supposed to eat , in order, Protein/Veggie/Low carb side if I want. How many ounces of Protein do you weigh? Veggies?

What did your surgeon tell you?

I weigh my Protein 3-4 ozs. Then i use a measuring cup for my veggies & carbs (if I have them) 1/4 cup each. I eat Protein first then veggies, etc.

Good luck.

this might sounds silly, but is there a reason you eat the food in a specific order? Just wondering... I wasn't sure about the measuring thing too...

I fix 3 to 4 ounces of Protein ...half a cup of veggies and a quarter of a cup of startch at every meal ...I eat it in that order because I want the Protein first then the veggies and if I am too full I forgo the starch.

I use a kitchen scale and measuring cups

Not silly. It takes your stomach longer to digest Protein so we eat that first (to make sure we get it all eaten) then if we are still hungry we move on to veggies for their nutritional value and carbs last.

Ever notice how fast you get hungry after eating a potato verses eating a chicken breast?

Totally makes sense! This is all a learning experience for me. I want to be as prepared as possible. Thank you! YOu rock!

I suggest you read Jean McMillan's book Bandwagon. It is my bible, I refer to it all the time. There is a link for it at the bottom of this site.

Thank you ajtexas0 - I suspected 3-4 oz for Protein was ideal. I'm going to start trying 4oz.

Veggies - Does it count if I pre-dice them before putting them in a 1/4 cup? I envision my portion of (lg stalks) Broccoli being much more if I dice first. Hm? Or aparagus? Does this sound silly?

I'm just asking because I never measured before, and I want my progress to be a bit more, um, progressive. :P

I don't eat many carbs very often, except if it's a slice of whole grain bread, or a whole wheat pita, or cous cous.

Just want to do this right this time around...

I pre-dice my veggies. To be honest you are not going to overeat on broccoli or asparagus. Just watch with starchy veggies like peas & corn. If I have a salad its more like a cup, but lettuce is mostly Water, very low on calories.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
