Finally Approved After Peer Review

Recommended Posts

I went into the office to pay my program fee and receive orders for pre-op testing. My doctor then asked me why I won't consider bypass surgery instead and people don't usually lose but 50lbs with the band. Has this happened to anyone else? I'm not considering bypass but I'm curious to know if anyone else's doctor recommended bypass instead lap band.

Thanks

mine did but told him i really preferred the lap band so he enforced on me

that diet and exercise and a positive attitude (along with this band) would help

me succeed. he stressed it would not just fall off......but it would be an effort.

so if you are willing to live the band life (changing the foods you eat to better choices

and exercise, i say do whatever surgery you want). if someone gets the bypass, sure they will lose at the beginning, alot, but if they dont change what they eat, and begin overeating again, they will gain it back. carnie wilson for example. had bypass and now got banded. def not an easy fix.

as for his only losing 50......i am 73+......missy is 150+ and jim is 125+...and the list is endless......so yeah, it works....

all the best my dear :)

My friend had the bypass back when it first came out... It was really dangerous back then... but she was life or death... Anyway - fast forward 10+ years and she's put on at least 60-80% of her weight... but her health is alot better.

Also, when you have the bypass, you can't ever drink again! You need to research any surgery you are thinking of having. And ask alot of questions to your doctor.

WOW Carolinagirl congratulations on your success! It is really good to hear about others having success with the band.

I thought it was a little odd for the doctor to recommend the bypass being that I am only wanting to lose about 80lbs. I know the weight does come off quicker with bypass but my personal choice from the beginning has been and will remain lapband.

My mom had bypass in 2002 and she has had all kind of health issues since the surgery as well as having to have her gall bladder removed. She cant eat certain things til this day or she will be sick and bedridden. So bypass is out of the picture for me.

Thanks

I can believe it Carrie Carrie. I just think bypass is too dangerous. I was just wondering if anyone else's doctor recommended bypass to them instead of the band. I know first hand experience (mom had bypass) how bypass works and I dont want to go that route.

I don't blame you. I'm the same way... the bypass was pretty scary to me. I don't mind doing the work to lose weight. I just need a tool to help me keep it off... I know you'll make the best decision for yourself. Good luck!!!

I was afraid of bypass. My best friend has had a lot of absorption issues (vitamin and mineral) since surgery and she is lactose intollerant now.

I want to lose around 100, my first goal was to lost 70, but then after I got started I decided I could do better than that. As long as you are commited to doing what you have to do (smaller portions, healthy foods, exercise) you will do fine and you success is limitless. Look on utube for videos - there are a bunch of video blogs of very successful bansters, who have maintained for years.

FYI, keep in mind the less you have to lose the slower the weight loss. Kinda sucks. As my doctor said you look at fat percentages -you will likely lose 50-60 % of that in one year and then more after that if you stay committed- so for those who have more to lose they lose more in a year than someone who has less to loose, but they end up lossing the same percentage.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
