This is just horrible and completely inexcusable. I cannot fathom this happening in this day and age, and worse, I can't fathom the pain and fear your poor wife went through. I am truly sorry.

I would be raising holy hell if I were you. I'd be demanding a patient advocate, I'd also filing a formal complaint with the AMA and the hospital board directly. Quite honestly, I wouldn't stop until I had the heads of whoever was responsible for this on a platter. They cannot get away with such gross neglect.

One word. Unbelievable!

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying I don't believe the OP, I am saying that it is unbelievable that a person can be treated like this!

Please file a complaint with the Florida Department of Health. http://www.doh.state.fl.us/mqa/enforcement/frm_general-meducf.pdf

I hope your wife recovers, both physically and emotionally from this ordeal.

I would write a letter to the CEO of the hospital and copy the Dr., and the hospital's Risk Management Department. Print out a copy of this page and let them know that you are letting people know about your experience. I would demand that they write off any copayments that you might have had.

I work in Risk Management at a very large hospital and I can promise you administration does want to know about these things. I don't care what anyone might say, they do really look at these occurrances. Patient satisfaction is very important to the hospital and in some places, their bonuses and raises depends on good satisfaction scores.

When Risk Management gets your letter, they will look and see if this was below the standard of care, and from what you wrote, it was. If you can remember any staff names, that will help also.

Hope this helps and I hope your wife is doing better!!

Though it may not seem to get you any immediate results, definitely file a complaint with the FL DOH in Tallahassee. The state definitely needs to know about this sort of ineptitude, both on the part of the hospital and the surgeon.

All medical and allied health professionals need to be held to a higher level of accountability...to their patients and to their profession.

I'm sorry you had to experience this nightmare...hope everything's improved now...

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
