Pre-Op Diet Questions

Recommended Posts

I know I need to discuss this with my surgeons office, but I was wondering if you guys had an idea....

I've had bad Migraines my entire life, and artificial sweeteners are big triggers for me. No Crystal Light, no sugar free Popsicles, etc. How will I make the Pre-op diet work?

Your right, you should discuss this with your bariatric staff.

Does Stevia affect you, since its a natural sweetener?

id def discuss with the dr's.

on my preop, i could not have any sugar (and the items i could have)

contained those artificial items.

they may have an alternative plan for you.

again, best to ask the dr as they are the ones who will

be doing the surgery and can offer you the best advice.

Honestly, I've never tried Stevia. It wasn't worth the gamble for me as a bad Migraine can lay me up for days. I can live without all the above mentioned things, for sure. Just concerned about getting through the Pre-op diet. I'll definitely talk to my surgeon.

Hello Becca, I haven't had my surgery yet and I am too a Migraine sufferer. It does worry me somewhat, wondering if the Migraines could get worse during all this? Could you try just a little bit of honey for your sweetener? Getting used to just a little, might help? Keep me updated on how your doing. I'm new to this site, so hopefully I'll find ya again.

I buy Stevia at Walmart or Fresh N Easy stores. Very reasonable and its a natural ingredient. Been around for over 2000 years.

I have been getting Migraines for over 20 years now. I have been doing great since I was banded in the beginning of November. Not one Migraine since. I did have two during my two week pre-op, I think from the lack I eating. I don't really drink crystal light because of the artificial sweetener. I drink mostly Water, Decaf hot tea, and unsweetened iced tea.

I did talk to my surgeon about my migraines before I had surgery though so I would definitely consult your doctor. I too was worried but have been great. Good luck!!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
