First Major Stuck Episode

Recommended Posts

I know the rules, I know to chew, chew and chew some more; but my momentary memory lapse has made a lasting impression. I sat down tonight to dinner with the hubs, I had my baked chicken breast with a spoon of green Beans and a spoon of baked sweet potato with cinnamon on it. I cut my chicken into small pieces and put one in, and bang before it even reached my band I thought OH CRAP I didn't chew that good enough. Yup, in a few seconds sliming and pain, oh the pain. I got up and walked the pain was intense I thought I would pass out. It only lasted about 10 min, but dear Lord it was horrible. I finally felt it drop through the band - what an odd feeling. Now I ache and my throat even hurts.

I have heard people say go to liquids for a day and some say mushies. What have you all done after a stuck episode?

I can say I am really not interested in eating anything solid for a while.

Oye, isn't that the worst? I remember my first stuck episode. I sat at the table, pounding my chest, making horrible faces as I cursed myself for eating too fast. Of course my kids thought my little show was rather amusing. *laughs*

I would take it easy with liquids for the rest of today. Considering it wasn't a big episode, I would imagine by tomorrow you should be fine. Just start solids back up very cautiously when you do, just to be safe.

Best wishes to you.

My worst lasted about 30 minutes and the pain was excruciating. After that horrible episode I drank liquids for 3 days it was that bad. But I think you will be fine after a day or by tomorrow.

Ouch, you poor thing, it's an awful experience, it's happened to me twice in three months, first time on broccoli, it hurt and I felt it go through too and what a relief. Second time was on spaghetti, swallowed before chewing properly because I was in a hurry to answer the phone. That one was a pb and it put me off any sort of Pasta and I remember I had no desire for food for a good two days.

You'll be fine in a day or so just stick to soft foods and remember CHEW, CHEW, CHEW! Lol. I think someone needs to come up with a jingle about chew, chew, chew so we can get it stuck in our heads!

First bite syndrome. Know it well! As others suggest liquids rest of the day and you should be fine tomorrow. Good Luck.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
