Over Weight And Depressed:)

Recommended Posts

Before i had kids i was115 pounds. After having 4 kids I was happy with my body, not that I looked like j-lo but was size 8 in pants and felt just fine. Never was on diets my highest weight was 150. Well... I now have six children because I had twins that are now a little over a year and I am 198 pounds 5 feet tall and where size 14:( and suffer from high blood pressure.... My knees are always in pain ... My pcp says its all from all the weight I have put on... And that my depression could be also just cause I don't fit in to none of my old clothes... Is the lap band a good choice?? Am I being ridiculous? I want to feel better.... Mentally and physically... I have never been a plus size. Please no one get offended because I know that my weight is under 200.

I too never weighed over 120 lbs..even after 3 kids I still within 6 weeks returned to my size 5 jeans...until I had my 4th child at 33 and gained 80 lbs...after my metabolism died and lots of years of diet pills...weight watchers...jenny craig...and every other fad diet for 10 years my neighbor had lap band and lost 95 lbs and has kept it off for 4 years...so I knew I was so having the surgery...I thought if I gained a 100 lbs every 10 years I was going to weigh 400 lbs. by the time I was 60...my family suffers from high blood pressure...diabetes...obesity...strokes...and heart problems...I knew I had to get a handle on my weight...so I did it 20 months ago and I can tell you it is the most amazing journey I have ever taken and the rewards of being healthy and active again are just so wonderful I can't begin to tell you...It is a personal choice and alot of people thought I took the easy way out...but after 10 years with yo yo results it was the only decision I could afford to make...You know you better than anyone...if you are like me an have no will power to over come the love of food and the energy to combat the calories we ingest...then I say yes go for it...you will not regret it...

Omg thank u... I think what makes it hard is that I have to cook meals for my kids I can't just let them starve or let them live off Cereal and chef boyardi. And also the fact that I haven't told anyone about it because its personal to me...

Thats the crazy part before surgery I would eat before during and after meal preparations...lol..but after surgery your love for food no longer exist...you truly feel full...if you do snack maybe a couple bites and I feel it is impossible to indulge anymore...do your research on a good doctor...it isn't a easy journey and every body is different...I can eat foods my neighbor can't and vice versa...but the wonderful part is I can go to a restaurant with my family and get a kids meal and leave half on the table...it is truly amazing..much success to you and please do it for yourself...if you aren't use to dealing with being a larger person it is very emotional how we beat ourselves up about it and it effects all areas of our lives...I know my husband is so glad he has the woman he married back...before surgery I wouldn't take a picture to save my life...only did I allow my before picture taken to document my results...now I am such a camera hog...I run...jump...and chase the children with the best of them it just feels amazing to be healthy again...

I cooked for my family the entire time. During the pre op liquid, during post op liquids and mushies and for the last 22 months as I lost pound after pound. In fact it was therapy for me... I would cook stuff I wanted to eat....but didnt! LOL

After all the liquids You will be able to eat what they eat just a lot less of it.

The band may be a good option for you. I would consult a surgeon and start gathering facts... Just remember... the band will do the majority of the work but you have to put in a lot of effort as well. Its not a magic potion!

Good luck!

You're not being ridiculous at all. I did a BMI calculation based on your weight and height, your current BMI is 38.7. That is on the high end of the obese range, less than 2% from the morbidly obese range. It doesn't matter that your weight is under 200, for your height, it makes sense why you'd feel so miserable at your current weight.

Getting the Lap Band is a very personal decision. Do your homework on it before making the decision. These forums are great for anecdotal evidence and person experiences, but be sure to learn the medical facts as well. Learn exactly what the band does, doesn't do, what to expect after surgery, and what not to expect. I would even find a seminar with a reputable surgeon in your area so you can learn more there. Education will be your best friend in making this decision.

On a personal note- I think you're smart for trying to find a solution to your weight issues now before they get even more out of control. I only wish I'd gotten the Lap Band years before I finally did. Honestly, it's the best decision I've ever made for myself. I'm so incredibly glad I did it.

Best wishes to you on whatever you decide.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
