Anyone Else Had Wls With Spouse/partner/sibling?

Recommended Posts

My husband and I are being banded on the same day. I know it will be hard but we will have each other for support. BUT, I read today in a book that we should wait 6 weeks but it was mainly so one could heal and the other could help with laundry, supper, etc...

Just wondered if anyone else has had it on the same day or pretty close together with someone they live with? Do you regret that decision or was it nice to have someone else on the journey with you?

Do you know if they were happy they had each other for support? I guess my worry is just all the depression up and downs and emotions that go along with the surgery and if we will bite each others heads off if we are both feeling the same at the same time.. LOL... I guess we can always sleep in seperate beds !!!!

I have not experienced this, but my only advise is don't make it a competition. Each of you are going to loose at different rates. Use each other as support. Good luck to you.

My husband took the journey with me..... but..... he WASN'T banded... he just felt bad eating in front of me and decided he would eat more healthy. He lost 80 pounds.... Seems like we got a two for one! He has actually lost more than me. How fair is that??? Oh well... I'm really proud of him!!

I still have about 25 - 30 more to go...and he still needs to lose another 20.

Well what works for soem people don'r work for others so I guess it's goin to be a live an learn experience but you love each other ( I hope lol!) so half the battle is already won. I do agree with ajtexas0 don't make it a competition beacuse one he is going to win lol!! for soem reason guys tend to lose faster than us girls ( I hate them lol) Two that would only mak eu bitter =( so maybe just maybe if you do it at different times that can actually be prevented because you two would be at different stages and if you are competitive you get it don efirst so you have a head start ;-) ( omg! look at me being all evil and sneaky lol) also who is going to help you out guys? The first few nights I needed help turning on my own bed. Just think about it seetie ok. Major luck to you and your hubby =)

My mom and I had surgery together(only an hour apart) on 10/5/12. We've been taking care of each other and do far it has been wonderful to go through the same thing at the same time. The only thing I suggest is that you have someone help you the day you two come home. That is when you are the most vulnerable and actually may need assistance. My mom and I are doing great, we take a stroll around the house together to walk, drink our Clear Liquids together, and are constantly giving each other tips

My DH is banded too - but it was three years after me, I'd already lost all of my weight.

I'm positive his thinking was "well it was magic for my wife, so it'll be magic for me". Uh, no. He lost about 30kg which was enough to take him well out the danger zone health wise but unfortunately, it didnt do jack for his blood pressure, which remained high. He's regained 10kg of that over the past year, because truly, he's freaking hopeless. He's never exercised (truly doesnt have the time, he works so hard) and he eats whatever, whenever, and his band is too loose so his quantities are too big.

But being a guy, I dont think he cares much. He's not so into the looks thing as I am and isnt motivated by looking great, whereas I agonise over a miniscule muffin top and hit the gym for two hours a day. Its never come between us, but nor were we ever really support for each other it aht sense, our styles are too different.

I do know that i annoy him a bit - I am also gluten free, low fodmap (so no onions, no garlic, limited fermentable carbohydrates, low fructose) and I just wont go out, let me hair down, eat a heap and drink a few wines these days because the price I pay with belly pain is too high. He wanted to eat every curry in sight in Thailand and I was forced to stick to Water and a bowl of hot chips most of the time, I only dared branch out once or twice. I wouldnt have huge fattening cocktails at happy hour every day - he wanted me to so he could justify three beers I think.

but all in all, we coexist, much more compatible in other areas than our food and exercise habits.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
