Does The Restrictions Of Certain Foods Apply After Your First Fill?

Hi Everyone!

I'm currently on the pureed diet.

I was told that rice, Pasta, bread, steak, and chicken breast does not work well with the band. Does that apply to after the first fill? Right now my band is open, I have little restriction. I really would like to have sushi when I enter the next phase of eating solid foods. Please advise. Thanks!

Immediately after the fill, you should use liquids or soft foods only for 24 hours. Just remember to chew, chew, chew! I have had good results with seafood in all forms!

Right after fills liquid for 2 days and pureed for 3 days. When my band is open like it is now will it tolerate the foods that are prohibited after fills?

I am at restriction and I can eat any foods I want I just choose not to. The only things I have trouble with are raw baby carrots and cheap doughy breads.

First and foremost...remember that everyone is a unique individual, and no two bandsters will have identical weight loss journeys or food tolerances...

Rice and Pasta need to be limited as they are carbs...and our diet's first priority is to get sufficient Protein. Protein keeps you satiated longer than carbs. If you want to have rice, remember that brown rice has more nutrients than white rice.

I tolerate chicken in all forms...though it is easy to get the chicken meat too dry from microwaving. I can tolerate both light and dark meat, but have found that the white meat dries out more often.

I've given up on steak...though I pre band did enjoy it occasionally, post band it takes too much effort and time for me to keep it on my diet. If I want any beef, I will purchase Boar's Head brand of roast beef.

You can eat anything your band will allow you to eat. Some of us can eat anything and some bandsters must restrict what they eat due to food getting stuck. Some bandsters stick to a low carb diet and there are some who eat anything they want. But the goal of the band is to help you feel satiated with less food.

I find that eating a turkey sandwich made from deli turkey and a thin 100 calories bread helps me feel satiated much quicker than some other foods. I do mix it up and may eat a taco(low cal and low carb) or chicken chili or even a lean cuisine. The point is, the band helps me feel full or satiated much quicker than I was pre-band. I don't need to eat 3 tacos or a thick bread sandwich with extra chees and chips to feel satisfied.

Obviously eating less food should mean you are consuming fewer calories.

I too love sushi and I've had sushi a few times this year. The problem with sushi is it's so difficult to take small bites so be very careful. Sushi falls apart so easily after you dunk it in soy and wasabi you feel like you have to shove the whole piece in your mouth. Don't do it. Find a way to take small bites and watch out for the seaweed wraps covering the stoma in your stomach. The wrap or some unchewed veggies could get you stuck very easily. I'd say the rolls can be the biggest hazard since they are so big sometimes. Ask the sushi chef to cut them into smaller slices.

On more thing. Sushi is like a slider food for me. Eaten the right way, it slides right through the band and you won't get that satiated feeling you will from eating Protein first.

I agree with Sojouner.

We are all different and so are our bands.

I cannot tolerate rice , Pasta and bread (rarely eaten).

I do not remember how i was at the beginning because i stayed away from it because they were carbs. Have tried it since and was not comfortable. That doesn't mean you can't have it.

I love love love sushi . I eat it now and i ask for no rice and to have it cut smaller. Its still yummy. They don't want to do it but if you insist on it they will. It is not sashmi because it has the seaweed and looks like sushi w/o rice.

Steak i eat rarely and my favorite cut is skirt nice and thin.

Hamburgers are ok medium but can't a whole one and off course no bread.

Chicken- breast i can have the first day and cut thin and small. In resturants they are often dry. Most often i have thighs and i am happier. So you see we are all different. It is hit and miss so you will have to try. My big suggestion is don't try sometime your are questioning out side of your home especially for the first time.

Everyone is different, from what they can and can't eat to the diets they follow. I eat Pasta, rice, bread, potatoes, etc. all the time, if not daily, with no problems. I just take very small bites and eat slowly. I also don't follow a low carb diet yet still lose weight very well. It's just another example how we're all different and what applies to one person doesn't apply to all.

Just go slow and cautiously when trying new foods to see what your body can handle, and be aware that may well change after every fill.

With all this talk about Pasta too, have you every tried multigrain Pasta? I bought Barilla's multigrain pasta and it is really tasty. I have bought whole grain pasta before, not knowing multigrain was something different and I think it tastes better than the whole grain. To me, it tastes just like pasta and for a cup of multigrain pasta, there are 17 grams of Protein, 7 grams of Fiber, Omega 3, etc.!!!! I made a homemade pasta salad today and have a couple other pasta dishes to whip up with it. As long as I eat small bites and eat slow, I have no issues with it.

Additionally, I have been making dishes using the light laughing cow cheese wedges too that are tasty. I have had a couple fills and am able to tolerate chicken quite well as long as it's not leftovers as they get too dry.

If tolerated, I would strongly recommend the multigrain pasta so you are getting a lot of nutrients out of it.

For Pasta, try the Dreamfields, it has mostly non digestible carbs and works for diabetics.

Thanks guys! I'm going to avoid Pasta and bread as they are high in calories and have little nutritional value. When I consume flour or sugar I want MORE so I'm going to abstain from flour and sugar. I really want sushi though!!!!

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
