Recommended Posts

Hi everyone , I just recently got banded two weeks ago and was wondering if smoking is ok , I want to know if it will do any damage to me ?

Smoking seriously increases the risks of post op pneumonia as well as blood clots and pulmonary embolism. It also slows the healing process considerably.

I'm sure someone will chime in about how they smoked with no problem, but I'd seriously advise against it. The risks are real and not worth it.

i asked my doctor because i did smoke. and i had heard it was bad because of clotting and it can prevent healing but my doctor told me smoking is bad because it can cause your band to erode into your stomach. in which case surgery will have to be performed and it will be taken out and depending on your surgeon not replaced. i quit with help of of an e cig. to me it's not worth that risk. not to mention i can breath again. i don't stink. but i do have a hard time when i smell someone smoking. but i can finally say I did it

and my dr told me to stay away from people who smoked right after surgery for a little while. 2nd hand smoke can be just as bad.

you need to just stop so you can heal. i know how hard it is. believe me! but you can do it. just imagine your band eroding into your stomach........that helped me!

Blood clots! I had a Pulmonary Embolism and let me tell you.... I'd literally rather vaginally deliver quadruplets than go through that again! The pain is excruciating and the thought of "holy crap!, that could of just killed me!" doesn't feel good either. I'm coming up on my 6 month check up since my clot and I'm hoping to get off of my blood thinner, but this clot has changed my life. Because mine was from Nuvaring and smoking, my gyno doesn't want me on any type of hormones again, which sucks because I was only on it because of that. My hormones hate me big time since I had my daughter 3 years ago. I also have a much larger risk of getting another clot in the future. I'm blabbing, but if it helps one person then I'm happy! Btw, I've been smoke free for 174 days! Stop now, don't do like me and wait til it's too late!

I had a blood clot not caused by surgery and trust me it is HORRIBLE. Please do anything to avoid it.

FallonB - congrats 174 days is amazing! Great job and keep up the great work!!! @ everyone else, smoking is bad for anyone, it increases the risks of blood clots which can be fatal, not everyone is lucky enough to survive. I am a nurse and have witnessed this first hand :( smoking also raises your risk for lung disease and some cancers. Finally, yes it can cause your band to erode and really if you are going to the all the trouble to have surgery to lose the weight and get healthy shouldn't you go one step further and give up the smoking to and make a pledge to be really healthy?!!!!!

I'm 5 months post op down 50 lbs and the best thing I've ever done for myself!!!

Keep up the good work everyone!!!!

didnt your dr say no and not to?

smoking is bad for your health and its terribly expensive

spend the money on pampering yourself with new smaller sized clothes instead of stinkie cigs

Me too girl!! Are you in the full liquid diet right now? It’s sooooo hard!

      2. LadyVeteran1

Not yet. I was told I only have to do 24 hours of a liquid diet. But I have my pre-op tomorrow so I’m going to confirm if I need to do longer.

Your so close now! It's gonna be great :) Wishing you a speedy recovery and looking forward to seeing how it goes!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
