I used mine to pay all my co-pays and incidentals that my insurance did not cover. My out of pocket was only about 700 and I payed all of this with my flex.

Normally with FSA you select an amount you want to allot for medical expenses during open enrollment. You then receive a card with that amount and you are allowed to use that for qualified medical expenses (Your surgery is covered). Then each paycheck an amount is taken pre-tax which over 26 pays should equal the amount you allotted into your FSA.

I used my FSA to pay the deductible for my surgery and all I had to do was send in a copy of the receipt and the explanation of benefits.
