Hi All! Newly Banded As Of 9/27!

Recommended Posts

Ok so this is a HUGE adjustment for me. I'm happy I've made the decision and got the lap band but I'm also having some difficulty with recovery. I've been on chronic pain management for back pain for 2 1/2years and have now stopped so I can pursue the lifelong dream to be a healthier mom and wife. I'm having a hard time with the post op pain from the band and hiatal hernia repair. Has anyone had similar recovery issues? I'm so happy this forum is out there!! Looking forward to all the support and friendships.

I was banded on 9/17 with a hiatal hernia corrected and I had a difficult time the first week with pain and breathing. I wasn't getting enough liquids (only about 5oz) I was admitted to the ER for dehydration then the next day I saw my Doctor she said keep trying a couple more days but after the weekend I still wasn't getting any better and in a lot of pain, so my Nurse Prac decided it was best to deflate my band. She removed 3cc and after I had another IV bag of Fluid and soon after I felt so much better. The pain stopped and I was able to start moving forward with my diet. I took my pain meds every four hours for the first week but after deflation I haven't taken my meds except once or twice with a little port site discomfort when sleeping.< /p>

I would like to know what questions you wish you had asked prior to your duodenal switch surgery?

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
