Help: I Love To Work Out And Sweat (Need Advice) !!

In short, I love to work out and sweat (please don't feel grossed out by this). When I work out a lot I feel this euphoria and big time sense of well being. I've been like this when I was thin and running 15 miles a week back in 2001-2004.

Many times when I play basketball, I wear multiple layers of clothing. This is intentional because of how good I feel and my desire to lose more weight because of the extra heat it puts on my body.

My question is this

Because I wear multiple layers of clothing when I work out (and love going to the steam room after I work out), I'm really wondering if I need to be BIG TIME concerned with my hydration? Common sense says YES....but again...I've never had lap band surgery before and don't know the full "fall out" effects that I may need to be aware of.

I hear so many people talk about the importance of needing to be hydrated....and then thought to myself....wait....I love working out and sweating....maybe I need to be extra cautious here because....a lot of times I work out and don't even think about my hydration because working out is so second nature to me. I always have a bottle of Water with me (and refill it) when I work out....but again....it sounds like (given the amount that I sweat during working out and the steam room), I may need to SERIOUSLY watch out for this.

P.S. Just concerned that I might unconsciously position myself where something could go wrong. Again...I've been working out since I was 16....so this is a big routine and habit that I have at my local YMCA. Seems I need to drink a lot more water...or stop wearing the extra layers of clothing and going to the steam room....now that I'm expressing all of this out :)

Good for you!! I love exercising, but mainly I love weight lifting. Yes, you need to make sure you are staying well hydrated esp if you are sweating that much!!

It seems common sense....but it just hit me...I've had this huge routine of putting layers of clothing on so I can sweat and heat up my body temperature when working out.

I was talking to my brother yesterday and he mentioned that you won't be able to drink tons of Water all at once like you are used to. He also mentioned about sucking on ice cubes.....which made me think....OMG.... I'm going to have to rethink how I work out in terms of hydration.

Either...I may have to where lighter clothes....or lesson my work out so I don't sweat as much.

It's all Water weight which you will gain back once you start drinking again. Its temporary. I would try to squeeze in a couple extra cups of water on your gym days. If you feel you may be dehydrated, pinch the skin on your hand if it stays white for longer than a couple of seconds, you're dehydrated.

I am at restriction and drink lots of Water when I work out. Sometimes up to 2 liters in an hour. So not sure where the idea comes from that banded people can't drink a lot of water in a short period.

I love your positivity. It is important to stay hydrated even during heavy exercising. I have no problems drinking 2 litres plus a day of Water. If you are sweating so much you may need to replace some of the minerals etc you are sweating out too.

Nothing like a good sweating session to get the metabolism going!

How can you actually make sure you are getting your minerals....when in the liquid phase? Please be specific on what you mean by minerals and the specific supplements that have these minerals.....

I'm curious as I'm studying more and more about minerals....as they are much different than Vitamins.

Hi, I've gone back to working out pretty hard as well, and given my new apartment building has a sauna, been hitting it for an extra sweat fest. I'm 3 months post surgery. I've been drinking plenty of Water and eating well. But in the past two weeks I've been suffering from terrible Migraines, which I've not experienced before. I saw the doctor over the weekend who suspects I'm very low on sodium (I've always had a low sodium level). Awaiting a blood test to confirm, but he us fairly confident that's the cause.

Just a warning to keep an eye out on the sodium front if you are sweating extra hard, drinking lots of fluids and having an extra healthy diet. Sodium at healthy levels does assist with hydration and balancing minerals in your body.

A few gatorades have kept the migraines at bay since I spoke to the doctor.

My apologies, when you sweet loads you loose Salt and certain minerals as missy stated you can help replenish those with the low cal Gatorade type drinks.

I admire ur ambition, but I think you're overdoing it, especially with the sauna too. Anyway, yeah you need to be careful of dehydration & electrolyte imbalances.

I'm not doctor...but you are probably right. I just like to where extra clothing to sweat as it just makes me feel like a million bucks when I sweat. Plus...it heats up my body more...the more I sweat.

Although it could help in assisting in [non water] weight loss....I do like to wear extra layers of clothing because it makes me feel like a million bucks when I sweat alot. In short, I feel it benefits my well being. I figure I can't hurt whether its real weight loss or water....

I wear a sweat jacket when I jog in the mornings and it does feel great to sweat that much, you get rid of so many toxins that way. I wear regular workout clothes when I play soccer or do weights though.

I was very concerned about Water intake prior to my surgery as well. I thought I was going to be thirsty all the time because I thought my restriction was not gonna let me drink Water the way I did before. This turned out to be completely not true, I have 6 cc in my band and I can drink as much water as I want, so unless you're over filled you're gonna be ok.

Im hoping to start a couch to 5k soon before weather gets too cold here in PA. For some reason I feel a strong urge to start running, funny thing is..even as a teenager..I hated running(hence failing the mile run in gym class)

Maybe it's all the new found energy from weight loss. Go figure. Good luck to all you runners:)

Where do u live in PA?

Doing a 5k is on my bucket list. There's one this weekend but its gonna be rainy and cold! I guess I'll wait till spring. Then maybe I can run it instead of walking it.

      Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
      1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

        All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

      I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
