Camping on the band....help!

Recommended Posts

Ok everyone..I need your advice. I am going on a camping trip on April 7, 8, 9. Any suggestions on what to eat? I thought about taking some applesauce cups and those jello/pudding cups that you don't have to refridgerate and maybe some Special K/South Beach Cereal bars and of course...water. This is going to be a big weekend with alot of people there and I know some are bringing RV's so I can heat up my Soup and make grits/oatmeal. I know that probably sounds good enough but any suggestions for something different? maybe a healthy granola mix? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. :D

How about canned chili, Starkist lunch packs (comes with low fat mayo and pickle relish and 6 ritz type crackers, no fridge needed), and canned peaches or pears. Ok, I'm hungry now - time for lunch :D

OK, this girl doesn't live where we do PhotoNut, because camping with the wind blowing about 35 mph and rain in the forecast doesn't do a lot for me....actually to be honest I hate camping. It is like packing up my kitchen for a couple days and then having to unpack it. Camping is a great hotel/motel with room service. That's as rough as it gets for me :D

Hope you have fun on your camping trip.:)

Thanks for the advice guys! Keep them coming so I have a variety! :) What's funny is that I know what I am taking to get liquored up but can't figure out what I want to take to actually eat! Drinking....yes! Eating...no....to me, that is messed up. LOL! We are going to be camping close to Brenham, TX and it is a blast!!! There's about 150-200 people there and we have the whole facility to ourselves...bascially it's everyone hanging out, drinking and having a good time! :clap2: We belong to a club and it is our annual birthday bash and we have games, food, beer....fun, fun, fun:beer:  :D But this will be the first year that I am restricted to what I can eat. :hungry: :cry

Dody...no worries here.....I got the hook up on the hotel down the street for the showers!!! :heh: Believe me..I am a hotel girl too and this is once a year!! :biggrin1: I am hoping that it doesn't rain!! :omg:

My husband and I are regular RVer's. Unless you're on a special consistency like mushies, I would think you could eat what everybody else is eating. Granted, instead of eating a hamburger on a bun I eat it without and with a fork. But I still eat it. If they make chili over the fire, I eat it. It's great. Same with fish, or chicken. Baked potatoes over the fire are great, too. For the healthy side, I always had a bag salad and some fresh fruit on hand. And, I'd make a low cal dessert for everyone to enjoy. eggs in the morning are great, as long as you can tolerate them. I always find if I add a little milk to them they scramble up really fluffy.

If you're on mushies, I always took those packets of instant mashed potatoes. All you gotta do is add hot Water. I always had those packets of tuna to make a quick tuna salad. Refried Beans with cheese and sour cream. Cinnamon applesauce. Yogurt.

This is good advice for busy moms too! You don't have to go camping to appreciate the advice given here. I'm preband and these are good things to keep handy for lunch. :biggrin1:

Typical day with 2 boys....

Today my boys stacked their mattresses, 2 twins, on top of each other and were bouncing to see if they could hit the ceiling fan. Well, they did and came crying to mom. :)

Kathy473 ~ Sounds like a blast....wished I could join you! The part of the shower in the hotel is a great idea. :)

Jack ~ I love the thought of Gerbers. Who would have thought of that? BTW, I have read so many times how you eat Holy Shredded Wheat. How do you do it anyway? That sounded so good to me until I realized we're not supposed to drink with meals. Holy Shredded Wheat would be so dry. Please help me solve this mystery. :D

ddiedre ~ Does the milk mixed with eggs help a person tolerate them? I love eggs and usually use milk anyway.

Kathy, I feel your pain... I too am in the same boat but.... i get my first fill on the 6th and that is NASCAR weekend. We camp with about 30,000 people!!! I understand that you are supposed to do liquids for a couple of days after a fill. Would beer, wine and Jello shots be considered liquids? All joking aside, I am a little nervous on what to expect. This is a huge trip for my husband and myself and if I am miserable, he will be too!

I've always eaten my eggs like that, but I saw on a cooking show that if you add a touch of milk to eggs when you're making scrambled eggs or an omlet they fluff up. It changes the consistency of the eggs a bit and makes them "lighter" so to speak. Scrambled eggs can be a little rubbery if you overcook them. So, in an effort to break up the Protein of the egg itself put the milk in it when you scramble it. It doesn't affect the Protein quality, jut makes them lighter, fluffier. Although I haven't had any problems tolerating eggs, I would think that the slight change in texture may help some tolerate eggs better. Worth a try?

Not sure why your camping fair would be any different? To me, being restricted means that I can't eat as much as I did pre-band, but not so much restricting the types of foods. (there are some foods I don't tolerate, so I don't include them in my diet now anyway.)

Why can't you have all the wonderfull grilled foods you used to enjoy?

You might want to try the Jim Beam BBQ Sauce instead of the well known national brands. (I can't think of the name, but they are very popular....) The Jim Beam BBQ sauce has 20 calories per 2 tbls, instead of the 70-150 calories.

To be honest, after last week with my REALLY bad PB....I am so freakin' scared to eat anything like beef or chicken....I did have some blackened fish and that went well...but not too sure about the others. It was so painful! :faint: I have stayed away from foods like that and just kept on with soft stuff. Grits, oatmeal, Soups, cottage cheese, etc... I do eat ground beef with no problem. And salads go down fantastic! Maybe I am just getting worked up over nothing and this isn't going to be a big deal. I just didn't want to have a deflation done and then have to go back and get a fill again just for this. I did last month for my trip to Chicago and it's just a pain to go back and forth since Dr. Spivak is 45 minutes away from me. I am sure that this trip will be fine and a blast!!!! :clap2: Thanks for all of the great advice...I really appreciate it. :)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
