Drinking While Eating

Recommended Posts

I'm banded through True Results and was never told not to drink while eating. It's also not on any paper I've read.

Who here follows that rule? I think I'm going to start. And hope that it'll help some of my issues.

I was also banded at True Results. They told me it is ok to drink 1 minute after you swallow a bit. But, I do not drink while I eat because I have found that I eat less and stay full longer when I don't drink with the meal and also I have less issues with food not going down (weird I know). Anyway, that is what works for me.

Do what works best for you, good luck.

I wait 30 mins after a meal to drink. Those were the rules I was given, everyone's surgeon is different. Do what works and keep you losing weight.

Best of luck :)

Mr dr told me to wait 30 minutes.. For two reasons... One liquid will push up the food and it may come back up and or liquid can push the food down faster so you won't feel full as long. I have accidentally drank sooner than 30 minutes and sure enough... It usually comes up.

Yeah I think it will help me by not drinking. I haven't been for both meals today and I don't feel hungry yet (probably coincidence since I recently had a fill). There's no worse feeling than being stuck and I thought that drinking would help but it makes it hurt worse and I feel it going around the food.< /p>

I was told to follow the 30-30-30 rule. No drinking 30 minutes before a meal, no drinking 30 minutes after a meal, and you should take 30 minutes to eat ur meal so that ur doing it slowly.

My dietician said the reason for no drinking was because it can "flush" the food past the band thus allowing u to eat more, and also doesn't allow ur food to sit in ur pouch long enough to get a full feeling.

It was explained to me that if you drink while you eat, your food will be pushed through your band quicker and you will get hungery quicker. I know a lot of people who only followed that rule for the first little while and the thing about not drinking soft drinks, but they seem to be having more problems now. I prefer to stick to the rules.

I used to follow that rule, now I'm not quite as strict.

The problem is that I was banded 3 years ago and it seems that everything I was told about how a band works and what was necessary for it to work is no longer true! Frustrates the @@@@ out of me. It's as bad as the diet industry - low fat, no fat, low sugar, no sugar, low carb, high carb , butter is better than marg, marg is better..................... Seems like they don't really know what they are talking about and they make it up as they go along.

My doc says not to so you don't wash away the food. That was a hard habit to break I drink a lot of Water with my meals. I only sip now because if not careful it can get things stuck

This subject comes up so often and as you can see there are different rules from each surgeon. This is one of the things my surgeon discussed with me on my first post op follow up visit. I can drink whilst eating BUT I need to follow the one minute rule, bite, chew, swallow, wait a minute (or two) till the food is squeezed past the band, sip wait a minute ( or two) etc.

If you drink before your food has been squeezed through the band then the liquid will turn the food into a liquid consistency and it won't be the right texture as its squeezed through the band and will act like a slider food.

I have been drinking with every meal since I started my solids, I do follow the wait one minute rule and have not had any issues and still drop weight every single week.

Some bandsters can drink with meals others can't even if they follow the rule between bites and sips.

I guess in the end the best thing is find what works for you as an individual.

I will add that the no drinking rule was what my surgeon used to advise his patients but after conducting studies on this subject they found it was fine to do provided you followed the wait one minute rule.

Cheers!

Elcee I understand your frustration with the rules changing over time. I don't think they make things up as they go along. I think as they do more studies they find some of the old rules no longer apply.

Some doctors then pass these new findings onto their patients and some don't, that's why there are so many different rules we are all given.

Who knows a year from now they might be telling us we have been doing everything wrong, lol!

Down 33 lbs and slightly stalled, but I'm gonna reevaluate and push through. I started back to work last week after 2 years of being disabled due to mental health as well as my weight. It's a great job and I'm just so happy to have this opportunity at a second chance at life. Hope everyone is having their best journey ❤️ Together, we got this!

Hi everyone! I’m brand new here. I just went through all my pre-op requirements per my insurance company and now everything has been submitted and I’m just waiting for final approval and my surgery date. I’ve been doing research, watching YouTube videos, TikTok’s, ect.. trying to prepare my mind and what to expect so I’ll be ready for the surgery. I was so sure and so set and so ready and excited. However, now that I’ve done everything & it’s almost here, I am sooooooo scared! I know why I want it bc I’ve tried everything and I just don’t feel like I can lose weight by myself. I’m tired of being overweight my entire life. I’m miserable, but I keep psyching myself out afraid of GERD bc I know how that can be and I don’t want to have to get a bypass after already gaining the courage to even get VSG. I’m scared of complications like I’mgoing to regret doing it and be depressed that I didn’t just be more disciplined and try again to lose the weight on my own even sitting here typing this knowing in my mind i just can’t and don’t possess the discipline. I’m also afraid I won’t be able to handle the restrictions of the sleeve. What do I eat? I don’t know how to eat healthy really and don’t enjoy healthy food. I don’t know how to do this! I feel so defeated!Someone tell me they felt anything similar to this or am I not ready? I thought I was. I am so tired of being sick and tired and so tired of myself and so tired of being stuck and stuck in this body and somebody different on the outside from what I feel inside. I just want to ball up and cry.

Am feeling this right now. My surgery date is 4/1. Sign the consent tomorrow. I feel like I overloaded myself with too much info, too many opinions. Got to the point where I was wondering if I should do this. Then I thought of my reasons for taking this step and that settled my nerves. Still get moments of doubt but am striving forward. Am just going to follow my book from the surgeon. Joined this because I was told by my dietician that I should do this for support
