Progressing Post Op Diet Early

Recommended Posts

I know diff drs have diff rules, and I've been allowing myself a few tiny bites of well chewed food and its not hurt physically (honestly I hoping my bowels get regular w soome solid foods). I'm 10 days opst op and supposed to be on liquids only, not even mmushies. I'm sure someone has and still been successful, but did anyone else progress their diet (w/o overeating or eating wrong) and if so how soon? And was it as bad as the drs say it is?

Your right, different docs have different procedures. I was on full liquids for the first week and then mushies for a week, then regular food. I had no problems. You may want to call the office and see what they say, you will probably speak to a nurse. As far as regularity, I used milk of magnesia, worked great. If you were taking pain pills that may be why you are having a problem. Congrats on your surgery!

Ty! I know already my Dr would berate me so I'm not telling. And my regularity issues go the other way! But I've honestly seen some improvement, be it time of solid foods, so I'm >< <--- that much closer to comfortable. Didn't need the pain pills after 4 days post op (or so). My Dr had me on liquids for two weeks, mushies for three weeks, then solids. Its absurd if the rule is liquid in liquid out!

Truthfully, I truly don't understand people who pay big bucks to surgeon and NOT trust their Dr enough to follow their rules. J/S

My Dr. gave me the following post-op diet. Days 1-3 Clear Liquids, 4-6 full liquids, 7-13 soft solids, 14+ regular diet. I may have tweeked that a bit. I am healing well and no problems. I started stool softeners day 1, but never took any narcotic pain meds. Plus I also had a hernia repair the same time as my banding. I am scheduled for my first fill on the 11th of October. We are all different in our process but we are all striving for the same results. Good Luck to you.

what got me about your post is you saying your doctor would berate if you diverted and ate early, so you knew it (was not right). seems odd that after majory surgery and only 10 days out, you'd chance it.

you have to help the band if you want it to help you.

i really hope you do well.

Aww cmon ppl. It was a specific question, not an invitation to judge me. That's actually AGAINST THE RULES OF THIS WEBSITE. Please stick to the subject. I'm surely not the first. Maybe the bravest tho! :D (other Dr's diets would have allowed this. Thank u for ur .002 cents worth)(yes that is typed right)

I was on liquids until day 15 and yes it sucks! Remember if you do have a problem it will be just you and your doctor not anyone from this site who says "my doctor let me move to solids much earlier". Yes you need to follow your doctors orders as they know how they attached the band not how some random doctor does their surgery.

To answer your question, I will follow mt Drs orders to the T, b/c he has my best interest at heart.

First of all congratulations on being banded. You are correct each surgeon has his/her own set of rules as you've found out from these forums. My rules were first week liquids, 2nd week mushies, 3rd week solids and boy was I ready for solids by the 3rd week.

The most important thing that I can stress to you is that it's extremely important to keep an honest communication with your doctor. He is there to guide you and help you with your journey. We are all human and we all have our weak moments. Talk to him if you are really struggling with liquids for so long he may even have you start on mushies and at least he is aware if it.

I've done fine with the rules I had to follow and honestly if I had to do liquids for weeks I'm sure I would have found it difficult to.

Communicate with your carers, it's one of the golden rules to being a successful lapbander.

Stay strong and I wish you the best in this journey!

So by saying this, are you telling newbies to do what they want and not listen to their Dr???

Well I don't think the poster doesn't WANT to follow the docs orders, it's probably just lack of willpower. Us banders go through this whole process because we have eating disorders, & getting the surgery won't immediately change our habits. It'll take awhile :)

The past 2 days I haven't been the greatest, had some mashed meatballs and Nutella :/ It's harder than it seems. I admire the people who don't falter on their diet!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
