everyone is different. If I do not chew thoroughly, eat too fast,or too much it technically goes down but then it will come back up. Its not a violent throw up... its more like ... imagine if you swallowed a piece of hard candy and you caught yourself and were able to bring it back up. Its kind of like that for me but its not voluntary.

Now if I eat anything fatty... it will take longer and then start coming back up about 30 minutes after I eat.

It isnt painful...just gross.

Some people after they reach a point of restriction have difficulties eating certain foods. Everyone is different in this area but what can happen is the food will get stuck trying to pass through the stoma and can result in pain, sliming and even vomiting. Key is in the beginning to treat your stomach like a newborn stomach and introduce food slowly and chew the heck out of everything until you learn how your band reacts.

For me if I eat a hamburger or bulkie roll it will not go down and it will get stuck and cause a lot of discomfort.

One thing to know about vomiting. You do not want to be doing it a lot. You could possibly cause a band to "slip" and cause a new ball of problems. Learn to chew slowly as much as you can and cut up meats. I am 5 months post op and still have a hard time with it and I am learning the hard way. I have had 3 episodes over the past week.

I was the same way... but since this last fill I've had to "puke" several times. It's not the same as puking when you have the flu or something, it's more like coughing up the obstruction. At least for me anyway....

For me it feels as though there is something stuck between your throat and chest your body wants to help so your spit (slime) production kicks up 1000%. When I get this I know I have a few minutes before it comes up. Vomit (slime) the body's way of clearing the blockage. It's not fun be very careful with your eating.

Omgosh i cant eat steamed spinach on a lot of days. Some days i can eat something and the next day it just sits in my pouch then i throw it up bc it makes me sick. The main thing is chew till you want to spit it out and eat slowly! It takes me about 45mins to eat my cup

Its a pain/discomfort that is so difficult to describe unless you have been there! I think no matter how careful you are its going to happen and when it does YOU WILL KNOW exactly what it wont go down means!

For me its like a 50 lb weight is sitting on my chest! It happens to me if I wait to long to eat, if Im really hungry or too busy not watching my bites! I have always been a eat at your desk at the office kinda girl! NO MORE! Its too easy to not pay attention to what your body is telling you and before you know it you have eaten too much or your food wont go down! No fun!

and the yucky slime stuff! thats a whole different ballgame! its horrible!

I dont think anyone likes throwing up but for me...If its stuck and Ive tried everything...its coming up sometimes without warning! BLAH! :(

Good Luck on your journey!

I've never actually thrown up, but I have had stuck episodes. It's hard to explain, but it's like when you take a really big bite and you can fill it go down, you throat contracts and spasms. It's kind of painful (not crying painful). I've had it last for 2 mins or so. It takes a lot to make me throw up, or I'm sure I would have by now. It's mostly human error when it happens. But I have learned that I can not eat bread of any type. Even if I take tiny eraser size bites. And I have to wait for like 3 or 4 hours sometimes in the morning before I can eat because my band is just so tight.

I actually had a really bad time tonight ...... I tried to eat a turkey leg... I had to throw it up because it wouldn't go down. I took small items, but I guess not small enough

Never eat anything larger than two tines of a fork. Learn to cook at home- and avoid chain restaurants (good advice to avoid bad experiences). Do not force things down with fluid- you can cause a slip. Jump up and down, touch your toes - and wait. If something is stuck for more than an hour you need to be on liquids for a couple of days, maybe have some Fluid removed.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
