Getting Sick And Having Lapband

Recommended Posts

i am *nearly 4 months* post op

i feel and i think i am getting the (office cold)

so you banders, what is some advice to us newbies who havent

had to deal with this issue yet.

(i do have nausea meds to put on my tongue)

and i have the list from my surgeon on the meds i can/cant take)

def more concerned about the vomiting part but will try not to worry about what is not happening at this time.

thought this maybe a good thread to help out people as its getting close to fall/winter flu/cold seasons.

I actually would like to know this also. In fact...if one were to get the flu (and you have to throw-up) doesn't this affect the band in someway? Using common sense....it would because your regurgitating the food that you threw up through that small pouch (and that can't be good).

It raises another question: Could the flu have caused many band patient problems in the past....and sadly....the bandsters may not have known that their current band problems were related to the bad flu they got 6 months ago.

Likely ? No ....Probable? Yes

P.S. I know likely this would never happen...but I do think it is important for Bansters to prepare for the "what-if" scenarios just in case they do eventually get the flu. Statistically....all of us will get the flu one way or the other. Just all a matter of time. Personally, I would like to know how to navigate these waters if/when I get the flu in the future.

Thoughts/Opinions?

and when you get the 24 hour stomache bug, that sneaks up on you.. how do you prepare and what to get so you don't vomit every half hour! ugh! I had the bug last year in February, don't want to get it again, but if I do I want to be ready!!

yeah, def got me worried somewhat. i do have those meds for my tongue. i may call my surgeon later today and find out if there are any suggestions. i mean life happens, if we throw up, we throw up. i think jeannie told me that if its constant for many days (or several) to let the dr know and keep them abreast. that is a good idea. just a quick xray and we can see whats what inside.

i do hate being sick. more bitchy than normal. argh

I keep OTC anti-nausea medication in the medicine cabinet at all times. This way if I am hit with a sudden stomach bug I'm prepared to at least attempt to battle it. I too am very afraid of vomiting.

As for medications, I still take the exact same stuff I always have.

My surgeon told me I would have to throw up quite a bit and for a prolonged period for it to harm the band. I was nervous because I had done so after a "stuck" episode.

Would love to hear from others that have had to deal w/ the flu though.

Feel better soon CG.

I also keep anti nausea meds on hand. As for colds/stuffy nose, the sinus drainage will make your band tighter. I have allergies and when they act up my band gets very tight. I have to do liquids for a few days. If it continues over a week I get a small unfill.

This is one if the reasons it is so important to keep the relationship going with your doctor. We all chose the band because it was adjustable. So we have to commit to doing just that. Going to our doctor and managing our band.

Sorry for the rant, I'm off my soap box now.

CG (aka PP), don't worry, just listen to your body. You will know what to do and when.

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

      2. BlondePatriotInCDA

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
