I Guess I'm A Little Confused

from what I have been reading, when you get banded there is no restriction until you get your first fill. is this true or does it depend on the surgeon ?

Actually, it usually takes multiple fills. There are a few lucky people that do have some restriction in their band even with it empty but that is the exception not the rule. Many refer to the time period between surgery and the Green Zone as "bandster hell" because you're expected to eat like a banded person even though you don't feel like one yet.

It's all just part of the process.

i must be one of the lucky few (as i have the implication also). i have (restriction) just from that but do not have any fills. i eat as though i do (and stop at 1 cup of food). just because someone doesnt (have any restriction) doesnt mean they have the free for all lets eat lifestyle.

so use Portion Control (choose good healthy, lean Protein as options). you can do this with a good and positive attitude.

I had restriction from the start. I mean the actual band (with no fill) is only 1 1/2" around so it should create some restriction - well, easy for me to say... It did for me anyway. There are people who lose all of their weight without any fill and yes, there are people who have no restriction at all untill they get some fills. So, it doesn't depend on your surgeon... it depends on the person. I was VERY heavy so maybe that's why I had restriction (more fat around my stomach????) who knows?

Good Luck!

I'll be sure to ask my surgeon, I was under the impression that once the band is installed I will have restriction . that is why i thought the post op diet for 6 weeks is needed .

I have had minimal restriction till my last fill and i am 2 years post op. But having said that - i have not been hungry. So i have been able to eat more than i should, but i didn't and i still felt satisfied, it still requires some self control and careful monitoring. Now i am a little over full and can only manage 1/2 cup of food which my head is struggling with, but my weight is finally dropping again. My friend got to her goal weight and never had to have one fill. Everyone is different.

The post op diet is to allow your stomach to heal and adjust to the band.

Good luck.

My band wasn't installed with any fill. However I had restriction until the 5th or 6th week ... Then it was like... Oh my goodness I think I need my first fill, I was very strict with myself and especially when I Knew I didn't have any saline in my band. I lost 20 lbs just eating 1000 calories a day before I had a fill.

I had a tiny bit of restriction in the beginning but not enough to make a difference. I've had four fills now and I love it! I'm at 8.3 cc in a 11cc band. I don't think I'll need another fill anytime soon.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
