Lump In My Throat

Recommended Posts

Had a fill almost a week ago and I'm still only getting liquids down. I feel like I constantly have a lump in my throat. I can eat one or two bits of something liquid or soft before I fill stuffed but not an hour later and I feel starved. Getting some slime and PBs but no vomiting. Anyone have any insight?

If I had to guess, you're taking too big of bites and/or eating too fast. Because of it you're not eating enough and hungry often.

Try small bites, and I mean tiny. Chew it until mush and put down the fork and pause between bites.

When I finally hit the Green Zone, I had about a week of relearning how to eat. Once I got my bite size small enough I was fine. Here's a picture of the bite size next to my finger nail for comparison:

Mis73, great post and a huge thanks for showing us all how much we should be eating. Looking at this I am obviously putting more bigger pieces in my mouth. I am going to work on this tomorrow as I just finished eating dinner. It did take me 20 minutes to eat 2 oz of tunafish, 1/2 cup of green Beans and 1 hard boiled egg. I thought I was taking small bites and I am smashing it up til mush in my mouth, I think my bite is too big. I get the lump feeling too.... blah!

Nutritionist recommended a baby spoon & oyster fork until you have the bite size figured out.

I'm the same way right now. I have an appointment to go back to see my surgeon on Thursday. I'm going to see if he thinks I'm too tight and need an unfill. Thursday will be a week since I got my fill. I can keep my Protein shakes and Water down. Tonight I had Soup and so far it has stayed down. Any solid food that I've tried has not stayed down. I've also had A LOT of sliming and PB's!!! Good luck to you!

I know my bites are wayyyy smaller than I am use to, my portions are wayyy smaller, the time I take to eat my food is wayyy longer. My band is empty and I had never had a fill, however I feel the restriction as if I did. I am sure down the road I won't feel like this. I have been using a baby spoon but stopped. I am going back to the baby spoon and fork and pause inbetween. I have no other problems with eating, and I can eat almost everything so far. There are foods I simply will not allow, now.

I wish all surgeons would demonstrate a 'bite size' figure in their plan/manual they give us, that could be saving many many bandsters from many problems. But as Mis73 has posted, that is a size of a pinky size nail. My manual just says "tiny bites" as if I know how 'tiny' ..

I am still relearning and get that feeling often, it is difficult. I find that it does help me to not let myself get overly hungry.

Wow thanks so much for all of the info! PBs are productive burps where you burp and something else comes with it! Not fun :(. I'm still only able to do liquids but I'm gonna give it a couple more days before I go back to the doc. I might be too tight.

Omg you are so right! I thought I was too tight but i realized I needed to take smaller bites. Thanks for the pic because at first I didn't know how small was small enough.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
