I've Been Hungry! Will I Stretch My Pouch?

Recommended Posts

I had my surgery on 09/10/2012. I know that I should not be weighing myself but I have and on Saturday I had lost a total of 22 lbs but today I gained 4 of those back. I know this may be TMI but I have not had a bowel since Saturday either. I got really sick on Friday and am finally feeling better...so maybe that is why. I can now work out again since I am not sick but I have a question. Last night I had my one planned cheat and had a piece of pizza. The doctor told me I was 'following the diet too closely which made me sick' I am not sure how this is possible but she said I simply bottomed out...doesn't make sense but I introduced some carbs like she said. So now here I am ate a piece of pizza...feel like I stuffed myself although it was probably 5 oz and am now feeling bad since I have gained 4 lbs back. Is this how this is going to be all the time? Up and down? I introduced carbs because I was directed too but was doing so well on their specific diet, although it was a bit hard. I also ate today (three meals) one with carbs and one only Protein and feel bloated. What scares me the most is that I ate a meal at 5pm and then was hungry again at 615 and no it was not head hunger...so I ate 3 oz. I have a fill scheduled for October 17th but am afraid that my stomach is stretched...does anyone feel this way or have you felt this way? Is this normal? Can your band stretch after eating 5-6 oz at one time for one time? (this occured when I did not measure...of course....) Ugh I am stressing myself out because 1 I am hungry more often and closer together and 2 I am wanting to eat more at one time and 3 I gained weight back...Please help! Thank you!

Sounds normal. You just need a fill. Personally, I've always had a hard time eating bread and pizza. That's when I know it's time for a fill. I had the same problem with Constipation too. My Dr told me to eat leafy veggies like spinach and drink merimucil. Warm prune or apple juice works too. 4lbs is nothing to worry about as it could be retained Water or anything.

My dr said the same thing to me. I went in for my 1 week post op and told him I felt crappy. He told me to go home and eat some eggs lol. I was only supposed to be on full liquids.< /p>

After 2 weeks post op, I was still on liquids! No fair! Can't believe you ate pizza after 2 weeks. And I'm a big time rule breaker - but don't think I would've done pizza on week 2. I don't think you can stretch your pouch from occasional overeating. I think it's got to be continuous. My sister in law stretched her bypassed stomach out about 3 yrs ago. Gained back 150 lbs that she had lost. But she continuously overate. Just pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and tomorrow is a new day. This WILL work, if YOU WORK IT!! (yes, my late husband was a 12 stepper!)

Good luck!

If you've been a dieter for many years like many of us, you can gain 5 lbs during one day if you eat wrong, drink lots of fluids or anything with sugar in it. Or consume a lot of sodium or carbs. It's easy to gain 5 or more lbs of Water with all the meds and food we take.

I had a similar problem with gaining weight right after surgery, I flipped out about it. But I've figured out (from reading many posts) that it was from a lot of different reasons, us women have hormonal changes and that can cause weight gain, retaining Water which comes with that causes you to gain weight, and not having a BM will really mess with your system. My husband is on the low carb diet, I read an article that says if you actually add in carbs 2-3 times a week you will actually lose more weight than if you had 0 carbs. Good luck.

Thank you guys so much...you are SO much more helpful than the people @ Obesity Help....I had to stop going to that forum site because they are so negative. I am going to be so critical but do feel very bloated. I really need to stop weighing myself everyday...but can't help it. I just need to stick with my life changes and continue to be proud of myself. I have made one of the biggest changes of my life and it is not easy, that is for sure. Since I bottomed out due to not having any sugar or carbs, even though I am not a diabetic, eating the carbs in the pizza made me feel so great. I am going to make sure I do incorporate whole wheat carbs 3x a week. I have also found out that in the AM, my band is extremely tight and I can barely eat. I haven't found anything that I can't eat...but I am not eating anything that I used to eat...like french fries or any deep fried fatty foods. I am following the strict healthy diet that my doctor has me on, besides my one allowed cheat in which they gave me ideas on what to cheat with. I hope I am going the right direction! You guys are such great people to follow! Thank you!

i go through that too of gaining a few randomly one day and usually in a day or two i'm down again to whatever i was at. if you're doing the low carb diet (which i am doing too), i read that if you eat over your carb limit one time (like get out of ketosis), your body suddenly retains Water and you "gain" like 2 pounds... but its just retained Water. and once you're eating normal again, it goes away in a day or two. so dont freak out! :)

you're doing great!

I am not sure if anyone is still following this thread but I have just got my first fill on 10/17/2012 of 3.5 CC and am not full! Yet, when I eat I wont feel full and then all of a sudden, I am EXTREMELY full! I get hungry in between meals. I don't eat breads, although I did today which was a horrible idea because I am paying for it now. I normally eat 900-1000 calories with 65-70 grams of Protein and measure all of my food to 4-5 oz at a time. The Water intake is pretty hard for me and I wake up swollen. My question is if I have been losing weight too fast and why am I not feeling full at all, wanting to eat more, and then all of a sudden super full? I have lost 29.6 lbs and I am 6.5 weeks out (I had my surgery on 09/10/2012). I go to the doctors on 10/30/2012 and my doctor said I could have a fill then, should I look into it if I am not staying full in between my meals? Has anyone had this happen? I feel like I am feeling bad today because I had extra carbs, which I haven't done since before my surgery. Although they were whole wheat, I feel like eating carbs just isn't for me...it makes me feel so bloated. Does anyone else feel this way?

Thanks guys!

You're not supposed to feel full. You're supposed to feel satiated/satisfied. If you're looking for that old time feeling of fullness, you'll be eating constantly. Eating Low glycemic foods will help you feel satisfied sooner and longer. Eating processed foods will pass through your stomach, spike your insulin and you will feel hunger more often.

If you eat slow and if you eat the right foods that help you to be satisfied, you won't need that "Full" feeling. That's the feeling we're trying to avoid. That's what skinny people do. They eat till they are satisfied, not till they are full.

What do you mean by "extremely full"? Is it fullness or are you getting food stuck in your stoma? You say you can eat food but Water is difficult? You really need to visit your nutritionist/dietician?

It wasn't stuck I think it was because I had eaten carbs today and I normally do not eat carbs. It was not a stuck feeling because I could drink Water 45 minutes after my meal. I just felt different, maybe I ate too quickly and too much with food that expanded.

Jenn - you & I are on the same schedule... I was banded on 9/11 and have my 2nd fill on 10/29! Sounds like you're doing fine.

Eating slowly is a big help and stopping when you're satisfied is something I'm learning. I use little tupperware bowls (1 cup max) and kiddie fork / spoon so I take smaller bites. My co- workers laugh at my Hello Kitty utensils but it helps me :-)

Let me know how your 2nd fill goes!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
