Week 1 Help!

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone! I am 23 and I will be banded on October 3rd, I'm really nervous but I know this will benefit me in the future. However I need some help......can someone who's been banded please give me like a rundown of how week 1 operates what you ate (or drank rather)...I'm starting to get confused and I just really would appreciate some feedback!!! Thanks!!!

Check out this manual from a clinic:

Everyone's experience will be different. For me, I had very little pain and discomfort. But I was in shock over the huge amount of meds, anesthesia, anti-biotics and other crap they pump into your body. Took me a week to get over the trauma.

What you eat will depend on what your doctor tells you to eat? I was on straight fluids for 3 days and then mushies. So, I drank a lot of Protein shakes, broth, egg drop Soup, crystal light, popsicles etc. Then I moved on to Soups, yogurt etc. My doctor is quite lenient about pre and post op diets so I really didn't suffer.

I was on Clear liquids for the day of surgery and the day after and then moved to full liquids for the next 2 weeks. Anything that pours off a spoon (no chunks) - yogurt, pudding, Soup, smoothies, Jello, Protein drinks.

Your dr's office should be giving you some guidance and hopefully access to a nutritionist.

Good luck.

One thing no one told me about before the surgery was how much getting into and out of bed hurts post-op. While I was in the hospital I had the elevated bed with the side rails for help so I didn't really notice it until I got home. I never realized how much we use our abs to help us move around!! Just be prepared to move a little slower that first week. I had to swing my legs off of the bed first and then use my headboard to pull myself up to get out of bed. That is one piece of advice I wished someone would have given me!! Good luck!!

Ist week, some pain, some gas in shoulders, any liquid or non solid. Mostly Protein shakes and Crystal lite for me. I also drank some clear broths and after the first week just blended up chicken noodle Soups. Focus on Protein. My doc has me drink 2 oz of protein at the top of every hour and other sugar free liquids the rest of the hour. That kept me full. Try to drink something at least every 15 minutes.

Walk, walk, walk and if you have back or shoulder pain try windmilling your arms as you walk. Walk somewhere every hour even if it is only to refill your liquids. May be TMI but don't expect a lot of BMs. My doc would not even consider a laxative until after 5 days.

Follow the advice given by your doc and try to relax. Nervous makes you hungrier! Good luck and keep us posted on your journey!

The week I had my surgery I was a nervous wreck. The only decent rest I got was when they drugged me! I had no pain and very little discomfort, which was a huge relief. I made it through the liquid phase with plenty of Carnation chocolate mix. I would mix it with milk for more Protein, and it actually tastes good! Just make sure to have a few days worth of supplies (protein mixes, pudding, Jello, gas-x, etc) beforehand just in case you don't feel like going out. Good Luck!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
