Ready To Be Banded But A Little Scared....

Recommended Posts

Hello my name is Dee,

I have been considering the band for almost two years and have finally decided I am ready. I have tried everything from ZXT Bee Pollen diet pills to Weight Watchers. I always loose about 20 to 25 pounds then I gain it all back plus some.

I'm 5'2'' 232lbs my highest weight was 250lbs. I have lost 18lbs since July 9th with Weight Watchers. I have been trying to have a baby for the last almost 7 years even going through fertility treatments. To make a long story short I've been told the reason I don't ovulate is because I am over weight. I'm 36 yes old so my biological click is ticking and now I have been diagnosed with type two diabetes. My BMI is over 40 plus I have a health issue.. My fertility doctor said I need to loose about 65 lbs before I can start treatments again. The band plus my faith in God and myself are my finally attempts to achieve two goals...loose weight and conception.

Anyone have any feedback on becoming pregnant after banding?

I have started my 3 month weight management with a weight loss doctor and I am going to my first new patient WLS class on 9/24/2012. To satisfy my insurance requirements..... My husband does not think I need to do the surgery, but he is supportive.

I appreciate any feed back... Looking forward to responses :-)

Good luck to you on your journey. I am being banded on Oct 5th. I also have been unable to get pregnant due to my weight. I was diagnosed with PCOS. So, it was recommended by the doctor to lose this extra weight. After struggling with diet after diet, I realized that I needed help.

There are some great forums on here about conception & fertility while banded.

Wish you all the best,

Thanks to both of you for the support. I have been reading the forum and have found it really inspirational. It has really helped me to let go of a lot of my fears about the surgery. I'm excited about the while experience.

I was banded yesterday. Starting weight 248 at 5'5" but highest at 275. I have been looking into the lapband for several years. My insurance had a strict clause prohibiting the procedure so i had to finance in house. Also had to repair a hiatal hernia while in surgery that i never knew I had.

I cant wait to start getting this weight off! Good luck to all of you!

I can't help with the pregnancy questions but there is a forum for pregnancy and bands that has a bunch of information. My one recommendation is buying the book Bandwagon by Jean McMillan (there is an ad at the bottom of this page for it). Read it and have your husband read it, it will help both of you with the new journey you BOTH will endeavor. It is my bible, I love the book!

Good luck with your journey.

I also can't help with the pregnancy questions, but I do want to wish you the best of luck! I am 6 1/2 weeks post op. I am glad to hear your husband is supportive. Support is a huge part of it. I have family and friends who are supportive, but I also have a Mother who is negative about everything. Anytime the slightest thing is wrong with me, she thinks it's the band. I have felt under the weather the last day or so, and she is convinced "that thing in my stomach is infected." So yeah, the support is important.

Good luck with your journey and be sure to stick around here....this place is a huge blessing!

I am also trying to get healthier with the help of the lap band for when I do decide to have children. I have already been informed it will be a struggle for me at my current weight and with PCOS and no ovulation. I have to take Metformin and those suckers are horse pills, plus they always make me feel so sick. :/

@contrabanded I have just started the metformin to help get my sugar under control. I have to take 500mg twice a day. Yes they are horse pills! Lol... And can make you have an upset stomach at times. that's the reason I stopped taking them before this time my doctor lowered my dosage. Good luck to you on York weight loss and becoming pregnant...

I really enjoy this forum. I learn a lot of new information every day.

@ Lori I got a Laugh out of your mother saying "That thing in your stomach is infected"...... Sounds like something my mom would say. I casually mentioned the surgery to her and she instantly said she don't think I should do it. But she is always asking do I have a bun in the oven yet. The next time she asks I am going to tell her the Lapband will help me get the bun in the oven.

Sorry to hear that you have been under the weather I hope you feel better soon.

@DarlinDede...oh yeah, my Mom went on and on before surgery about how I shouldn't do it.....people die from it....I'm gonna die from it...on and on. I tried to educate her to no avail. I finally gave up, told her I'd die staying obese, and left it at that.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
