Time off after surgery? How much?

Recommended Posts

Hi!

My first appt with Dr. Bauman is Tuesday. I was reading through some literature that he gave me and it says to not be entirely independent the first week after surgery.

My DH has to take the time off work and I was wondering if you all felt ok to be on your own after that first week?

I am a SAHM to two young girls (10 months and 3.5 years).

Just wondering how recovery was!

I was fine however - my 2 yrs old then was taken to daycare each day. I don't think I could have taken care of him while I was off more so the first few days. I wasn't suppose to lift more then 25 pounds for 2 weeks. DH helped @ night w/ him so it wasn't too bad for me. You know who could answer this great for you would be Court...she hasn't been on in a while but maybe she will see this. She is also a SAHM of 2 but I think hers are a little older then yours.

Good Luck...Keep up posted!!!!!

Hello! I think the only major thing to worry about after the first week would be lifting. I can't remember what the weight limit Dr. Bauman gave me was, but he can tell you at your appointment I'm sure. I would say though that other than lifting, you should be fine after the first week. I stayed by myself way before the first week was up, but then my little boy was 3 at the time though and didn't need to be picked up. So, I guess all in all, I'm not much help am I?:) Sorry about that! If you have any other questions, I'll try to be more help on those!:biggrin1:

Congratulations on getting your appointment!

You will be amazed at how little time off you'll need. I didn't have the band and I was only out for 3 weeks. They kept saying it was major surgery but dr b doesn't treat you that way. I think lapband can go home same day.

I would recommend help with the baby, it will be hard not picking her up but it's only for a few weeks, I think.

Good Luck. I think I might have an appointment there tuesday as well.

you will definitly need help with the baby.

Work? I took one week off, and that was just enough time off. I was really tired going back the first day back to work, but i am ALWAYS sleepy and tired anyway.

Thank you all for your responses!!

How long do you think I will need help with the baby? Will the one week be enough??

DH only gets a few weeks vacation a year and I hate to use them all up on this!! :)

Please don't think of it as "using up" DH's vacation on this...You'll feel fine, but you shouldn't be lifting the lil' angels. Consider this...vacation at home this year: Picnic in the livingroom floor, Go to your nearest zoo...(the animals are like the kids springfever is making them playful and fun to watch), get a sitter one day and have Mommy and Daddy day.

Make this a treat...ultimately your whole family will reap the rewards so why not start the week of surgery with fun for everyone.

Thinking of you, Tammy

O'Riley won't have much time to sit down. Dr b get's his patients up and running quickly. Do you have a teen baby sitter or in laws who can help?

I had a full rny and I couldn't care for my daughter. She went to daycare everyday while I managed to get myself taken care of. I wish you well and things should work out. Ps I don't have any family in NC at all surgery was very tough. We had to organize childcare to help but noone at night.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
