Those Last 15 Lbs Are The Hardest To Lose.... (Wondering If I Should Try Lo Carbing It)

Recommended Posts

It'll be 3 yrs for me on Oct 1. I'm 15 lbs from my goal of 135. I can't seem to be able to get these last few pounds off! The first 100 lbs were much easier! I was down to 144 this past Dec (right before getting married), but after my band slipped and I was unfilled, I gained back about 16 lbs (managed to lose 10 of those so far).

My husband has had success with lo carbing it. He's lost over 80 lbs this past 3 yrs (gained back 20 of it since meeting me almost 2 yrs ago!) I have a hard time lo carbing it - I luv carbs so much! He thinks life would be so much easier if I would just eat meat and veggies. Even yogurt and fruit to him is considered "junk food". I luv my band and the fact that I can eat whatever I want, just much less of it and still lose.

But it doesn't seem to be working anymore. I'm still eating a toddlers portion and nothing is budging. Should I bite the bullet and try the lo carb fad? I majored in nutrition in college and know that carbs are healthy in moderation (healthy carbs that is - like wheat bread, brown rice, whole wheat Pasta, fruit, etc), but I also see how the lo carb "movement" works for most people. I can't imagine my life without bread, Pasta, fruit, and potatoes. I usually eat 1 pc of whole wheat bread a day, 1 pc of fruit, maybe a few bites of pasta or potatoes. Not THAT much. Would it help me lose that extra 15 lbs I have left to lose?

While I'm so proud of the fact that 3 yrs ago I started at 248 and as of today I weigh 150, I would be so much happier with myself if I actually reached my goal. I actually already met my dr's goal (150), but I still feel fat (especially the back fat).

How do you lo carbers do it? Do you feel deprived? Do you eat fruit and just stay away from starches and sugars? My husband seems to think that if you're not in ketosis, you won't ever lose weight. Well I proved him wrong (lost more than he did while eating carbs!), but it's hard to argue with something that seems to work for most people. And my PA is very anti carb. I always get a lecture when I see him about my carb intake.

Just wondering....should I keep to what I know works (eating everything just very small quantities of it) or mix it up and give the lo carb thing a try?

Marci, I was a lo/no carber for about 25+ years. It worked for me until I turned 50 and then it got real hard. I know what you mean. I have 30 lbs to go and it's so much more difficult now. For me, living here in Colorado, it's the end of the fruit and harvest season. I've been eating far too many melons, apples, grapes, peaches and the list goes on. But, I'm not gaining. I too will be going on a lo/no carb diet here the first week of October to drop another 5-8 lbs before we go to Mexico.

I did feel deprived back 20 years ago but I spent 30 days in May back on a low carb/Paleo type diet and dropped 10 lbs. It was tough and I did miss fruit but I didn't really miss bread or rice. I think I'm over the bread, rice, potatoes thing now.

I think your husband is right if you decide to go for the purist no carb diet but it's so difficult. I lost my 10 lbs in May still eating 1 or 2 fruits a day. Maybe one apple and a few handfuls of blueberries was all I allowed myself. If your hubbie is also on a similar diet it would be so much easier since you won't have to watch him eat Beans, rice, breads etc. Look at the Paleo diet. It's very similar and is lo carb. You must keep all processed foods out of your diet and that's just good nutrition.imo

I think after a few months you stop craving it and can manage without all of it. It depends how bad you want to lose those last pounds. Either you eat less or exercise more - the low carb thing will get you there because it puts your body in a fat burning state of keytosis. I would recommend exercising more to keep it off by building muscle. But ultimately - its up to you how badly you want those pounds off. Good luck!

I can survive nicely on basic lean Proteins...the only deviation that I require, and would miss terribly if I did not have them would be to have salad veggies.

Our brain needs glucose to function...so some healthy carbs are essential. I now enjoy a diet that does not have any bread, potatoes, or rice...and has little fruit, but I must have salads!

You talk about food, but what about exercise? What is your current amount of exercise you are getting?

I go to the gym 4 times a week, walk at 4.0 mph on the treadmill at 3% incline for 45 minutes. I do 20-25 minutes of weights. I walk my dog twice a day. I guess I could bump my cardio up a little. I think my exercise is right where it should be tho. I just wanted opinions on the lo carb diet. Thanks!

Me too! Luv my salads. My husband eats all the meat and veggies he wants (including lotso salads). He just doesn't eat fruit, starches, sugar. It's the giving up of the bread and fruit that will get to me tho most, I think. Thanks!

Hi, I’m new here. I’m currently on the liver shrinking diet. So far so good, but I have to say I haven’t found a protein shake I like. Anyone have any suggestions please? My surgery date is September 17th.

Fairlife Core are by far the best. They taste just as they are - chocolate milk. You can either get the 26 grams or the 42 grams (harder to find and more expensive). For straight protein look at Bulksuppliments.com ..they have really good whey proteins and offer auto ship plus they test for purity. No taste or smell...

Fairlife has strawberry, vanilla and of course chocolate. No more calories than other protein drinks. Stay away from Premiere, they're dealing with lawsuits due to not being honest about protein content.
