What the heck just happened to me????

Recommended Posts

I tried some scrambled egg and grits this morning, 1 egg & a couple of tablespoons of grits.

I started feeling full at about half way (I think that was what I was feeling). Then I really had to struggle to not throw up...then I got the hiccups...

AND THEN I started foaming and all this mucous came out...I mean bunches, no food just mucous...was that sliming? what caused it?

I was banded 03/14/06

The way I was told was that when something doesn't want to go through the narrowed portion of your stomach, where the band is, our body produces lots of mucous to help lube it up and make it pass easier. Because something is kind of blocking the way, not necessarily stuck, the mucous comes up instead of going down.

Everybody has their own "high risk" or nono foods. You discovered that eggs can be one for you.

Breads, Pasta, rice, red meats, dry meats in general, eggs, salads. All of those can be high risk for some but not for others. It's one of those things you kind of have to figure out for yourself.

I don't buy the extra mucus theory. I think sliming is our own saliva that don't go down because the stoma is completely plugged up. I was very tight one morning and threw up "slime" for several hours, but there was nothing stuck in my band. I just couldn't swallow the saliva. I have found that spitting my saliva out during a tough stuck period sometimes helps. Or it just makes it easier to PB. Oh, the lesser of two evils.

yes it was mucus because if it is anuthing like what I have had which was a whole lap full and very slimmy .Mucus it is...which is the way our body moves stuff through our body just like the bowels.

StrawartS,

I think we've stumbled upon ANOTHER explanation of sliming. After all, saliva is a protein-based substance produced by the body for the purposes of moisture and lubrication. Same as mucous, only thinner.

The chemistry of a mucogelatinous substance (grits) undergoing early digestive mutation via amylase enzymatic activity from the mouth, and consisting of the exact mini-particulate size as to mimic such substances as brick mortar, caulking compound, or flour-based glues used to fabricate plywood, portends a hazardous dietetic choice for many Bandsters.

Oh Jack, you do have a way with words. :faint:

Saliva contains digestive enzymes that helps to break foods down --typically in the mouth. I assume when something gets stuck at the stoma (cardiac sphincter muscle leading into the stomach), a signal is triggered to produce more saliva for the digestive enzymes. That's my 2 cents anyway.

Welcome to the club! I can do grits....LOVE 'EM! But now....if I try to eat eggs....forget it!!! They get stuck! And boy that really pisses me off sometimes....I haven't tried them over-easy...maybe that would be easier to get down.:D Have to try that. Sorry you had to go throught that but it happens to us all sooner or later! :cry

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
