YellowRose 0 Posted March 25, 2006 Now that I am seriously thinking about getting banded, my husband is giving me a lot of grief about it. To give him a lot of credit, he had quit smoking and drinking. With smoking he used the gum, and with drinking he wnet cold turkey. It was not fun living with him during this time but together we made it thru. In my case I have Hypothyroidism and a growth hormone deficiency, both which have contributed to my weight. I am 49 years old and well over 300 #'s and have tried all kinds of things, Weight Watchers (I don't like counting my food) Atkins and the worst of all Metabolife. I actually lost over 70 #'s this way, but when I had my last miscarriage I found out that it messed up my thyroid more that it already was and had to stop. I have already told him that I am going to have this surgery if my new employers insurance covers it. It is my body and health that I am concerned about. I want to loose this weight before I get any of the problems from being over weight He thinks I just need to quit eating as much. He has a high metobolism and losing weight is easy for him. He does not relize that it is just not eating as much that is the problem with me.:rolleyes Please help me explain this to him so that he will start giving me support and not hassles. WE have been married over 31 years and I know that if I can get him to work with me on this it will make the journey to a new me a lot easier Thanks

We have to eat in order to stay alive. Let him know that he can quit smoking and drinking and substitute something else in there place but you can not substitute anything for food. If it was as easy as cutting back and not dealing with thyroid problems, then the situation wouldn't exsist. I'm not married, but I do know how hard it is when someone (ex-long time boyfriend) says "Why don't you just eat less?" If I could do that without becoming a raving lunatic because I'm hungry, I wouldn't be getting the lapband. Good luck. We're here for you. Audra PS: I also have the thyroid problems, diabetes, and high cholesterol, two of which can make me very hungry when they are not in good control.
ReneBean 3 Posted March 26, 2006 My husband is MO, too. He also seems to think that one should just "cut back" on eating. When he gets too obnoxious, I just point out how well that method is working for HIM... HUGS! I hope you can get through to him. Right now, I am about THRILLED with my band. I got my first fill - and while I am not so restricted that I am UNABLE to eat any particular food, I am restricted enough that if I eat a small portion, I recognize that I am full, and I stay full for a long time. I CAN eat more than I should - but if I don't, I am not clawing at the walls with that stomache growling empty torment that you get when you diet with no assistance. So long as I can keep my head on straight, this is perfect! Good Luck!
maryb 1 Posted March 26, 2006 Yellow Rose, getting the band won't be easy without your husband's support. Have you taken him to one of the seminars? The seminar was very helpful to me. I went with my friend because she was thinking about getting the band. Afterwards, I showed my husband the information and asked him what he thought about me having it. He said He thought it was a great idea and that he supported me 100%... Good thing since I had to pay $15,0000 for mine.
