Surgeon Etiquette

Recommended Posts

Okay just wondering if your surgeons came and saw you post op. I'm was at a very high end care center. I think the dr. did a great job with the surgery. But afterwards I was in recovery and he was at the desk accross from me. He didn't even come over to see how I was. His partner stopped in the next day as protocol. I just thought it was rude I was laying right there. He could have at least told me things were routine, etc....

No, I didn't see my surgeon right after surgery (I was same day surgery and went home), he was operating on other patients. Like a revloving door one out one in... however, after my surgery was over he immediately came out and spoke personally to my family about my surgery while I was in recovery.

I have seen my surgeons in the office post op visits and they are all very friendly and great listners. I wouldn't take it personally, because they were probably doing the same routine. Now, when you go to your post-op visits will make a difference in the world how you feel about your surgeon thereafter...

I saw mine both right after surgery and the next day. He also spent considerable time reassuring my mom I was ok after surgery. However, I am fully aware of the fact my surgeon is a rare one with a good bedside manner who actually cares about his patients as people rather than just another surgery.

Mine looked in on me when I was awake ask me about pain and how I felt, told me that everything went great. I got a call from the head nurse the next day checking up on me, she will be my main point person from here on in, doing fills and appts.

My surgeon talked to my family after surgery, but I did not see her until my follow up appointment. They are busy people operating on numerous people in a day, so I would not hold it against them.

Thats normal. A surgeon will not see the same day of sx. Unless simething went or is going wrong with you. You might not even see the surgeon the next day if he has a pa. How do i know because i am a surgical rn. Usually if thry sit at the desk they r reviewing charts placing orders or divtating their notes.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
