So, I'm past the surgeon consult, the psych consult, keeping my diet journal, exercising (lost a tiny bit, in comparison to what needs to be lost) and I see the nutritionist tomorrow, who wasn't exactly real friendly on the phone ( "you don't even have diabetes" )...what exactly should I expect with seeing her? Any thoughts? Her comment may have come from how much she could bill me for the consult - as she went on and on about that, too. She said without another diagnosis (besides fatty liver disease)...I'm better off to pay her cash, which she's willing to take only $50 and let me turn that into insurance and see if they'll reimburse me. (but she was sarcastic and sort of rude, so I'm worried what her recommendation will be....) :/... Thank you.

I would let the office staff know about your feelings. They can always dump her and get a new one. They may even have another one you could see. Either way...let the office manager know.

Oh my goodness! I'm so sorry that the nutritionist was so rude. I love my nutiritionist! She has been such a wonderful resource! Honestly, find one that will give you what you need. I can't imagine going through this process without the nutritionist's help, support, and expertise.

What DesertRose said!! Dump her and tell them to find you someone else. Regardless of who pays the bill whether it is out of pocket or insurance you are the customer. You're paying for a service. Just like tipping a waiter or waitress. Apparently, she is only concerned with how she is getting paid.

My doctor had two Nuts. The first one while not as rude as yours was not very nice. I asked from then on to see the other Nut. Not sure what the Diabetes comment was about.

Thank you DesertRose, Tlm, Jim and Honk...for your replies. I did go to the appointment after calling my surgeon's office before I went - the surgeon's office helped me feel a bit better / more confident with the nutritionist - plus my husband went with me as he's supporting me though this. My husband thought the nutritionist was "great" but I noticed she didn't really know much about lap bands and I asked her about bands vs. sleeves (in relation to nutrition) and she said she saw more complications with sleeves because they "slip" Ahem ! She knew a lot about nutrition itself (I'm a nurse, new nurse) so I had some #s on nutrients needed etc. She also said she doesn't do consults after a surgery because "they haven't taught me how" and "every patient is different." She was friendlier in person than on the phone. Although I'm in the Modesto area...area.... is the key word as we're really quite rural and I don't wish to travel far to have the surgery done. She still appeared to be willing to recommend the lap band with my diet success / failure history..and if I'm approved, I'll find another nutritionist to see in Sacramento or somewhere else, after the surgery. I want the continued support ...so...it is what it is :) The surgeon office also said that she is the only nutritionist they use for all consults...again I'm sure due to availability.... Thanks again, everyone.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
