weightlifting and the band

Recommended Posts

Has anyone experienced any complications in the gym. Some exercises gets your stomack right on a bench pulling lots of weight. I'm wondering if anyone discussed this with the Dr. Like you know laying on a bench face down pulling up weight, Pressyre on the port and pouch.

Hiya Bobby

I've been going to the gym for a while now & haven't had any problems at all.

If you have any concerns... I would give my surgeon a call or an e-mail? He would be able to answer your questions...

Sorry that's not much help!

Hey Bobby --

My surgeon said I'd be fine doing anything except sit ups -- and I could start those back eventually.

But, in my experience, there are some weight repts that don't work well.

For example -- on Tuesday, I told the trainer I wanted to work my side muscles at the waistline -- obliques (sp) ??

He's a trainer that does tend to push a little (extra) weight on me...but I have had some pain on the side where my port is since then. Just tender, nothing I'm worried about. Also -- when I do crunches (I never do full sit-ups), I sometimes feel like I've overdone it in the band area. It may be that my ab muscles are just that wimpy because I'm too wimpy to work them out more regularly.

Arms, no problems. Certain lower body/leg exercises, no problem. But when your torso starts getting involved in pushing the weights, my feeling is go with your gut. (ha ha)

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.
