Starting Cooking For My Dad

Recommended Posts

My father is 90 and his caretaker moved away so now I have to prepare his meals. This is the one thing I didn't want to do.

My sister comes out every 6 weeks and freezes dinners for him. I go every am, noon, and dinner to get his meals for him. This is sooooo hard on me. My hubby does all the shopping for us because it is too hard for me to be around food. Now I have to do the shopping for my dad.

Naturally the foods my sister has frozen are all wonderful and are the same foods from when we were growing up. They are so tempting! And he wants brownies, cakes, snicker bars, etc., etc., etc.

This is almost too much for me to bear. I have gained about 2 pounds and I know it is because I am stressed at having the responsibility of taking care of him on my shoulders, plus being around all that food.< /p>

I'm not worried, I will lose the couple of pounds. What I am wondering is - has anyone else been in a similar situation? How do you deal with it?

Thanks for any help.

Terry

I believe until you get to the root of the problem through some counseling and understanding things better for you, you are going to make yourself miserable for the rest of your life. You can't go on avoiding food. You need to learn other ways of dealing with your anxieties around food. There is no easy way around it

I'm really sorry your going through this. I know it's really hard just the emotional part itself, never mind trying to loose weight too.

I've been there, done that, taking care of the elderly. Plus, my husband is a lot like your 90yo dad. He is totally helpless when it comes to feeding himself. I make his Breakfast, lunch & dinner every day. After 40yrs I'm kinda over it.lol

I just had to make up my mind that I needed to loose weight for my health. food will always be around, but I do not have to eat it. Do I want a brownie or do I want to be healthy?? Being that right now it kills me to walk or stand (arthritis in knees), I choose get healthy.

Is it possible to get Meals on Wheels for your dad a least one meal a day?

Your daddy's 90, give him anything he wants, including a healthy child.

Best wishes for you!

jeani - thanks and I know you are right. I have been thru counseling a few times and it did help.

Maddysgram - Meals on Wheels won't work. I tried to have him get that, but he said he can't stand long enough to microwave the food. Thanks for the pep talk!

To bad he won't eat it when it arrives, noon meal, he wouldn't have to reheat. I work for 2 ppl who get it, it's the best thing that happens in their day.

I think it is a shame too. That would give him some interaction with some other people too. He needs that!

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
