Adderall Xr Concerns

Recommended Posts

I am now 3-1/2 weeks post op and slowly getting back to eating according to my Dr.'s schedule. He advised me to talk to my prescribing Dr. about how to take my Adderall. I haven't taken it since the day before my surgery and I need it to function at work. However, my prescribing Dr. told me to just open the capsule and mix it in with my food. My fear is that I'm on 30 mg and it's the extended release version. Does this concern any of you or should I just do as told? I would be more comfortable going to a 15 mg pill twice a day.

I am also on Adderall for ADD. Yes, the capsule can be broken and sprinkled in applesauce, pudding, etc. the medication insert addresses this situation and my MD has confirmed it.

I wouldn't do! When I was younger I could not swallow pills so my mom opened the capsule and put it in pudding for me... I have the time release as well... My heart rate got up to 200 and something beats a min and I was in the ER I couldn't breathe! It was really bad! I was only like 11 or 12 so that might have something to do with it.

I would think if your PCP told you it was ok, I'd take his word about it before regular lay people on a forum.j/s

If you go to the Adderall website and read under the dosage and administration, you will see this is OK. Yes, pediatric patients react differently to this medication than adult patients.

Ok. I looked it up at the Adderall site...

"ADDERALL XR capsules may be taken whole, or the capsule may be opened and the entire contents sprinkled on applesauce. If the patient is using the sprinkle administration method, the sprinkled applesauce should be consumed immediately; it should not be stored. Patients should take the applesauce with sprinkled beads in its entirety without chewing. The dose of a single capsule should not be divided. The contents of the entire capsule should be taken, and patients should not take anything less than one capsule per day."

Glad you went to the Adderall website. ALWAYS follow the advise of your physician and in this case he was following the correct guidelines. My ADD seems well controlled on 20 mg every day. Prior to Adderall, I had been on Straterra but my ADD was not well controlled. My physician had taken me off of it immediatly before surgery, however, I was put back on it a week after surgery. Praying you continue to do well.

I use to take the 30mg ER and I quit taking mine because I couldn't take it. I am now on 10mg pill twice daily.

My doc told me not to take any extended-release pills after lap band. However, I'm sure in some cases it's ok and you should just do whatever your doc ordered.

Day 1 of pre-op liquid diet (3 weeks) and I'm having a hard time already. I feel hungry and just want to eat. I got the protein and supplements recommend by my program and having a hard time getting 1 down. My doctor / nutritionist has me on the following:
1 protein shake (bariatric advantage chocolate) with 8 oz of fat free milk 1 snack = 1 unjury protein shake (root beer) 1 protein shake (bariatric advantage orange cream) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein bar 1 protein shake (bariatric advantace orange cream or chocolate) 1 snack = 1 unjury protein soup (chicken) 3 servings of sugar free jello and popsicles throughout the day. 64 oz of water (I have flavor packets). Hot tea and coffee with splenda has been approved as well. Does anyone recommend anything for the next 3 weeks?

All I can tell you is that for me, it got easier after the first week. The hunger pains got less intense and I kind of got used to it and gave up torturing myself by thinking about food. But if you can, get anything tempting out of the house and avoid being around people who are eating. I sent my kids to my parents' house for two weeks so I wouldn't have to prepare meals I couldn't eat. After surgery, the hunger was totally gone.

I have my final approval from my insurance, only thing holding up things is one last x-ray needed, which I have scheduled for the fourth of next month, which is my birthday.
