I'm So Depressed -- Please Help

Recommended Posts

So I got on the scale this morning and I have GAINED two pounds since my first fill. I have been really "good" this week and yet I have barely made a DENT in my weight since the surgery. I have lost 8 pounds so far and I was banded almost THREE MONTHS ago. It's just very depressing and I just want to curl up in a ball and cry and have no desire to see my friends, go out, do anything really. All this money and effort and I feel like a complete loser.

I'm also pms'ing and probably retaining Water (in addition to just being sad from the TOM), but still, if I don't start losing some weight soon, I feel like I'd just die. So depressed..........

I got a fill of 1.3 cc's and have absolutely no restriction at all (ate 3 slices of regular bread last night). Trying to make another appointment for ASAP but it's really tough with work and all.

Just needed to vent. Thanks for the support guys.

Xann,

Hang in there girl, a lot of us have been in the same boat, here take my life jacket for a while.

I have dealt with a lot of depression since my banding. I try and remember that we all started at different weights so we are gonna lose differently as well. Some of us are turles and some are rabbits, but look on the bright side, you are lossing, yes it is slow, but lossing, its a blessing.

My first visit back to the doctor I had gained 10 lbs back from the weight I had lost during my all liquids stage.

This is a life time journey so dont be so hard on yourself, I think to myself " I didnt get this heavy over night and I am not going to lose it over night". I believe your period has something to do with weight gain, I know I bloat something awful, so Water weight will get to you. Drink more Water, sounds crazy but it helps flushes the extra water away.

We all are here if you need us, vent, cry or even cuss....you're not alone!

oh honey, i'm in the exact same boat. i gained 6 lbs after the liquid stage then didn't lose anything for 2 months after. get another fill asap! or at least as soon as your doc thinks it is safe. i really didn't start the 2 lb per week weight loss until 3 weeks ago! i really had to get real restriction before that happened. some people can get the band and it's like a placebo device. they know it is in there and they are able to 'eat like a bandster' with just will power. i'm not one. plus you're pmsing and bloated probably. i have lost 6lbs of Water weight in one day before, so you're most likely not gaining weight AT ALL. i felt exactly the same way 1.5 months ago! now i think 'omg, it actually works!' b/c i have 3.3ccs in. feel better! and see your doctor!

Xann,

First, I want to congratulate you on the 13.2 lb loss. That's absolutely great! You may not see it as great, but it is. Think about it. In 2 months (average 8 weeks, which included post op healing) you've lost 1.6 lbs a week. That's NORMAL! That's wonderful! :cheer2::)

Second, YOU SAID YOU WERE PMSing. What the heck are you doing on the scales? :brick:If you know you retain Water, and you are susceptible to some depression during this time you may be setting yourself up for disappointment. My scale always shows at least a pound or 2 gain right before that time of the month. I blow it off as my female burden to bear. I might not even weigh myself and wait until "Aunt Flo" is gone because then my body has wrung itself of those excess fluids. I might actually see some positive results. :clap2:

Wallow in your time of the month as you need to. Try not to go on too many binges. When it's all over, get yourself up and get movin'. I guarantee you'll feel better and you'll see the light. Doctors recommend excercise during "that time of the month" to decrease cramping. Maybe you could go with that and those endorphins from the exercise could pull you up out of the depression at the same time. You never know?

Xann77,

I've had my hard times as well, try to get more walking in if you can and plenty of Water, Water, water. This helped me when I would plateau.

Keep you chin up, you'll get there.

Xann,

I didn't have any restriction at all until what, two weeks ago when my doc filled me to 1.5 cc. I'm thinking of going in this coming week for some more. I can still eat alot. Don't beat yourself up b/c your not at the proper restriction level, trust me. I didn't get my first fill until after 4 months after surgery WTF!!! I have to keep reminding myself to be patient with this, it will happen.

I don't think you wasted your money.... you'll see. Hang in there.

HUGS !!!

Xann, you are not at a good fill level, so it is possible that you need another fill. I'd wait until after you are done with your period because while some women get much tighter, others find that their band loses restriction.

If you continue to feel like a Turtle, then I highly recommend talking to your doctor. Explian your story, and that you need additonal help. It might be that they recommend metabolic testing, thyroid testing or getting a cortisol level.

I didn't feel any restriction until my fourth or fifth fill. Don't be impatient. The band will work just give it time and get it filled.

Xann,

You probably heard it before but the band is not a miracle worker just by itself.

I've been banded for over 3 yrs., had 8 fills, do correct food choices (most of the time), work out 4 or 5 days/week, and yet I'm loosing weight like a turtle or spend several months in a row on a stupid plateau not loosing at all - yes, I fully understand how frustrated you feel, I know exactly that feeling. But there's no way we can turn back now, we have to keep on going and along the way in this journey with our band, we learn there are some good days and some bad days. Giving up is not an option. This will take a little more effort from us than for most other bands, but we'll get there.

Hang in there,

niki

Be patient! I know it is hard, I was banded in August and gained back my preop wait until finally after 4 fills I hit restriction the end of October and the wait started to fall off. I don't believe in working for my band, it works for me. Keep up on the fills and it will start to work for you too.

I joined yesterday when I was struggling with this preop diet...
It typically comes and goes, the hard times and easier times. I'm on day 6 of 14  shakes, water, sf Popsicles and jello. And I might actually be losing my mind. But, oh dear lord has the fear set in. Not about the surgery itself, but life afterwards. If I feel this crappy on the preop diet, am I going to feel like this forever after?
I know most of the answers are no, not forever. It might be worse after for a while, then get better. I know it's a more of a mental challenge than physical after the first couple weeks of healing. I get all of that. But I'm starting to feel scared about losing myself afterwards.
It might be my hormones or desire to chew something salty talking.. It may go away soon or tomorrow.. I can hope, anyway. But right now.. The fear is real.

And this liquid diet can bite me.

Fear is normal, but if it makes you feel any better, I'm 4.5 months post-op and the pre-op diet was by far the hardest part of the whole process. There will be challenges and a lot of new things to learn, but I can honestly say at this point I feel so much more "back to normal" and was even able to go on a week-long vacation with my kids without stressing over it. It's so worthwhile.

@NickelChip This actually does make me feel better! Thank you so much! After the onslaught of Covid, we've all had to deal with a "new normal", so I know it's possible. It's just the fear and frustration in this moment that makes me question if I can find another "new normal" afterwards. The thought of just a few more months seems daunting some times, but I really do appreciate input and real experience. I'll use that to get me through for a few more hours! LOL. Thank you so much! And I'm glad everything is going so well for you! ❤️

I started my 10 day pre op diet yesterday I need flavor!! I'm not big on the chocolate protein shakes so I just got to use up what I have was thinking about freezing it to make it like a ice cream so its something I can chew a little. Idk this is hard but I know I can do it just need to find new things to try

You can try. I've read other people have had good results with protein-shake popsicles, etc. My personal experience with it? Sucked.

I tried making 'fudgesicles' with a couple different flavors of a premade shake, as well as a protein powder I blended myself and all of them came out revolting? The powder ones, all the protein sunk to the middle; the premade shakes, the popsicle had a disgusting texture and the protein seemed to leave a weird fluffy film on the outside? I couldn't stomach it.

Maybe look into flavoring additives? I was able to have sugar-free coffee /soda syrup flavorings, sugar-free drink flavorings and baking additives like almond, rum or pepperment extract. The extracts helped me the most as they added no extra sweetener.

On the other hand, if you can get your hands on an unflavored/unsweetened protein powder, the syrup flavorings are perfect. I love to use Boost "Just Protein" (which is unflavored) with milk and a Chai-flavored sugarfree syrup.

        Good luck!
